Clinical Laboratory Scientist Position

UPMC Altoona is seeking a dedicated Medical Laboratory Scientist for a full-time position with 12-hour shifts from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., including rotation as necessary.
We are currently offering a SIGN-ON BONUS up to $15,000, with the amount varying based on experience and commitment length.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide courteous and professional interactions with all laboratory clients; respond promptly to telephone inquiries. Maintain effective communication both internally and externally.
- Comply with established laboratory and hospital policies regarding procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety, compliance, and personnel policies. Follow established protocols for specimen collection (including phlebotomy, as needed) and processing, ensuring the appropriateness and stability of samples. Execute qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures with precision and efficiency.
- Identify critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results, following established protocols for follow-up. Recognize factors influencing measurements and results, initiating corrective actions as necessary. Troubleshoot issues with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results according to predetermined protocols.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment within the scope of training, performing quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration as per defined schedules and written instructions. Conduct minor repairs and manage reagent and supply inventory effectively.
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of techniques, principles, and instruments, understanding their interrelationships and the physiological conditions affecting test outcomes.
- Assist in test development and methodology/equipment evaluation, selection, and implementation.
- Perform High Complexity Testing (as defined by PA DOH) independently.
- Temporarily assume first-line supervision of the section/department as delegated.
- Train and orient new staff, students, and residents as assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution AND successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Lab Scientist program.
OR
Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP or equivalent categorical or MLT certification.
OR
Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years of experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory.
Preferred: 1 year of experience in a hospital laboratory. Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems is advantageous.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) (ASCP) or equivalent certification preferred. New York License required for New York locations.
