Highway Maintenance Specialist

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Highway Maintenance Operator to join our team at the Virginia Department of Transportation. As a key member of our maintenance crew, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our highway system.
Key Responsibilities- Perform routine maintenance tasks, including clearing drainage, removing debris, and cutting brush.
- Operate a variety of equipment, such as dump trucks, backhoes, graders, and tar distributors.
- Use hand and power tools, and perform manual labor tasks as needed.
- Respond to emergencies, such as traffic accidents and debris, to provide traffic control and reopen roads.
- Set up work zones and perform traffic control, focusing on proper work site protection.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
- Skilled in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
- Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
- Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
- Skilled in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
- Experience in emergency operations, including snow removal, storms, and accident clean-up.
- Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
- Combination of training, experience, or education in Maintenance, Vehicle Operations, or related field.
- Experience in roadway maintenance and construction.
- Valid Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements.
