Fisheries Ecosystem Modeler
Position Overview:
We are looking for a dedicated postdoctoral researcher to contribute to the development of ecosystem models aimed at evaluating the effects of harmful algal blooms on fishery resources and food webs within the West Florida Shelf (WFS). The successful candidate will operationalize these models for consistent application in fisheries stock assessment and management.
Harmful algal blooms, particularly those caused by the toxic dinoflagellate, Karenia brevis, frequently impact the WFS.
These events can lead to significant mortality rates, with some species experiencing up to 50% loss during severe bloom occurrences.
In previous research, the WFS Ecospace model provided critical estimates of red tide mortality for gag grouper (Mycteroperca microlepis), which informed management strategies and catch recommendations, setting a precedent for future applications to other species.
The primary objective for this postdoctoral role is to quantify the impacts of red tide on Gulf of Mexico (GoM) reef fish populations and collaborate with NOAA scientists to integrate these findings into various stock assessments and management recommendations.
This will involve utilizing an established spatially explicit ecosystem model of the WFS that captures the extent, intensity, and duration of red tide events, alongside their interactions with target species, as well as the associated food web dynamics.
The selected candidate will join a diverse team of professionals, including fisheries ecosystem modelers, stock assessment experts, physical oceanographers, bio-geophysical modelers, fisheries monitoring leaders, and various stakeholders from commercial and recreational fishing sectors.
Key Responsibilities:
The postdoctoral associate will be stationed at the Nature Coast Biological Station, with office operations on the main campus.
Responsibilities include:
- Analyzing extensive datasets related to fish populations, habitats, and water quality.
- Updating model inputs with the latest data.
- Incorporating new remote sensing and bio-geophysical model outputs into the WFS ecosystem model.
- Calibrating the WFS Ecospace model to enhance accuracy and quantify uncertainties.
- Developing web applications (rShiny) for stakeholders to access and analyze model outputs.
- Presenting findings at stock assessment workshops and professional conferences.
- Preparing scientific publications, grant reports, and outreach materials.
Minimum Qualifications:
A PhD in fisheries science, quantitative ecology, oceanography, or a related discipline is required.
Applicants should demonstrate a strong interest and experience in quantitative fisheries, food web ecology, and marine ecosystem modeling relevant to resource management.
Experience with ecosystem and food web models, fish population dynamics, stock assessments, species distribution models, and geospatial analysis of large datasets is essential.
Candidates should be comfortable working in collaborative, multidisciplinary environments and engaging with resource managers.
Independence and teamwork skills are crucial for meeting project goals.
Proficiency in R is mandatory.
Strong written and verbal communication skills are necessary, as evidenced by publications and presentations.
A commitment to fostering an inclusive environment and collaborating with colleagues from diverse backgrounds is expected.
Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with Ecopath and Ecosim software, particularly Ecospace, is advantageous.
Experience in developing R shiny applications and open science tools (e.g., GitHub) is preferred.
Knowledge of linear and non-linear modeling techniques, spatial-temporal data analysis, and satellite-derived spatial data analysis is beneficial.
Familiarity with the Gulf of Mexico marine ecosystem is a plus.
Experience in project management and leading interdisciplinary research initiatives is desirable.
The base salary is negotiable, starting at $51,500, with annual increases based on performance. Benefits include optional retirement plans, health, dental, vision, and disability insurance.
