Job Overview

Position: Lead Thermal Systems Engineer

Compensation: $130,000 - $160,000

Location: Houston, Texas

The organization is a prominent provider of technologies and a key supplier of products and equipment for the Refining, Petrochemicals, Renewable Fuels, Sustainable Plastics, and Green Energy sectors. The Thermal Systems and Proposals division is part of the Technology & New Business Group, which is tasked with delivering technical support across the entire range of technologies, products, and equipment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

This role is positioned at a junior level within the Thermal Systems group, with primary duties including:

  • Conducting thermal design and process engineering for Fired Heaters, Electric Heaters, Waste Heat Recovery Units, and related auxiliary systems to support technical proposals, projects, studies, and upgrades.
  • Collaborating with Commercial, Engineering, and Procurement teams on proposal initiatives.
  • Preparing and reviewing designs for Fired Heaters, Electric Heaters, and Waste Heat Boilers.
  • Creating and reviewing datasheets and documentation for Fired and Electric Heaters, Waste Heat Boilers, and associated components such as burners, fans, Air Preheaters, and SCR systems.
  • Developing P&IDs, reviewing line sizing, pump calculations, hydraulics, equipment and instrument datasheet preparation, interlock summaries, cause and effect diagrams, utilities, and tie-in summaries, as well as equipment layout and operating manual preparation.
  • Participating in 3D model evaluations.
  • Preparing material requisitions (RFQs).
  • Assessing vendor quotations and preparing technical bid analyses for items like burners, fans, and SCR system skids.
  • Coordinating technical inquiries and deviations raised by various vendors.
  • Engaging in management estimate review meetings.
  • Once a project is awarded, participating in engineering review meetings to ensure adherence to project schedules and review change orders.
  • Conducting burner testing and startup procedures.
  • Participating in HAZOP and SIL reviews with clients, end users, or EPCs.
  • Providing pre-commissioning, commissioning, and startup support at client sites for major package items like heaters, WHRUs, and SCR deNOx systems.
  • Participating in performance guarantee test runs.
  • Assisting in troubleshooting issues at sites.
  • Reviewing cost estimates for proposals.

TECHNICAL SKILLS, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in process/thermal design of Fired Heaters, WHB, and related systems.
  • Thorough understanding of relevant industry standards (API 560, etc.) and codes (ASME, ASTM).
  • Experience in studies, troubleshooting, and commissioning activities.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical capabilities.
  • Familiarity with FRNC-5 heater simulation programs is advantageous.
