Position Overview

The Certified Medical Assistant operates under the supervision of a licensed healthcare professional, executing a variety of clinical and administrative responsibilities within the designated area. This role is pivotal in upholding the mission, vision, and values of Phoenix Children's Hospital. Continuous professionalism, ethical conduct, and integrity are paramount in this position. Collaboration across departments, maintaining high performance standards, fostering a positive environment, and adhering to the policies and procedures of Phoenix Children's Hospital are essential. Current certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants (CMA) or American Medical Technologists (RMA) is a requirement for this role.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Accurately measuring and documenting vital signs, growth metrics, medical histories, and observable symptoms in the electronic health record.
  • Effectively communicating patient-related information to the supervising healthcare provider.
  • Conducting electrocardiograms, pulmonary function tests, and other diagnostic assessments within the Medical Assisting scope.
  • Collecting laboratory specimens, including blood samples.
  • Performing point-of-care testing.
  • Preparing and administering medications as authorized by the provider, while adhering to all relevant regulations and guidelines.
  • Executing routine screening tests.
  • Assisting the provider during examinations.
  • Managing sutures, dressing changes, and other first aid procedures.
  • Educating patients about examinations, diagnostic tests, medications, special diets, and health maintenance.
  • Disposing of biohazardous materials in compliance with OSHA standards and hospital policies.
  • Demonstrating infection control practices, including proper hand hygiene and equipment sanitation.
  • Adhering to PCH and OSHA safety protocols consistently.
  • Upholding HIPAA regulations at all times.
Administrative responsibilities encompass:
  • Communicating prescriptions to pharmacies.
  • Processing medication refills as directed by the provider, in accordance with hospital policies.
  • Securing prior authorizations for medications and durable medical equipment.
  • Screening telephone inquiries and accurately documenting clinical messages.
  • Returning patient calls with instructions as directed by the provider.
  • Assisting patients and providers in completing necessary documentation.
  • Utilizing medication reconciliation tools within the electronic health record.
  • Cleaning and restocking examination rooms.
  • In certain clinics, serving as a witness for controlled substances management.
  • Maintaining appropriate legal and ethical professional conduct.
Staying current with certifications, mandatory training, and professional development initiatives. Flexibility to assist in other practices as needed by the hospital or management. Performing additional job-related duties as assigned.
