About the Role Under the guidance of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, and in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary treatment team, the Behavioral Support Technician (BST) will deliver comprehensive and holistic assistance to patients admitted to the psychiatric inpatient units.

BSTs will support therapeutic environments through participation in program development and review, group or milieu-based interventions, and training on and execution of personalized behavior plans.

BSTs will assist in the completion of functional behavior assessments through data collection and analysis.

The BST also ensures the safety of patients at risk of self-harm or harm to others through direct observation, therapeutic interaction, and maintaining a secure care environment.

The BST effectively collaborates with patients by orienting them to the unit or space, addressing inquiries, gathering clinical information and collateral contacts, providing therapeutic support and psychoeducation.

The BST actively engages with patients in a therapeutic manner by providing structure/schedule, ensuring direct observation, and encouraging participation in group, individual, and milieu activities.

The BST fosters strong partnerships with all members of the care team with the shared objective of delivering excellent, safe, and supportive care to all patients.


Key Responsibilities Provide coaching and instruction for personalized behavior plans and group-based milieu interventions, including PBIS orientation, to members of the multidisciplinary treatment team to promote ongoing learning and enhanced clinical skills.

Assist in the completion of functional behavior assessments (FBA) and other related evaluations as directed by the BCBA for identified patients.

FBA responsibilities include, but are not limited to, conducting direct observations of identified target behaviors and reviewing historical behavioral data as requested.

Oversee the implementation of personalized behavior plans, as developed by the BCBA, through training of patients and treatment team members.

Collect behavioral data as directed by the BCBA to support data-driven decision-making regarding the continuation, modification, or discontinuation of individualized plans.

Manage an assigned case load for the shift.

Ability to conduct comprehensive evaluations in collaboration with the clinical team as well as through documentation to reflect evaluation/intervention/safety planning.

Respond appropriately and professionally to patient and family escalations by utilizing the least restrictive de-escalation methods, starting with verbal strategies, and physically intervening using non-violent crisis intervention techniques only when verbal efforts have been ineffective and/or the safety of the patient or others is at risk.

Maintain a safe environment of care. Visually monitor patients for at-risk behaviors and implement the interdisciplinary plan of care. Gather information from the clinical record to support patient care. Document observations in patient records and communicate relevant information to team members.

Encourage healthy coping through verbal support, implementation of structure/schedule, execution of behavior plans developed by the therapeutic team, management of the environment, modeling resilience, providing emotional support, and connecting with individual patients.

Redirect patients using appropriate verbal cues according to the plan of care. Assess patient responses to interventions and communicate findings to appropriate team members. Manage a therapeutic milieu or care environment. Participate in the development of behavior management and mental health care plans. Encourage and monitor activities of daily living (ADLs) as a means of reinforcing safety in structured routines. Perform vital signs after receiving initial training and maintaining competency.

Participate in safe physical transfers and patient ambulation through knowledge and use of body mechanics and gait belts.

Provide meal support to individuals or groups, including but not limited to creating a safe space, meal monitoring, meal coaching, and maintaining a secure environment.

Possess knowledge of behavioral health diagnoses/issues to understand the presenting problem and provide therapeutic direction and feedback to the patient. Communicate observation data based on the patient's goals and care plan. Respond during psychiatric emergencies using the least restrictive measures to ensure patient safety. Be proficient in the use of non-violent crisis prevention techniques. Maintain therapeutic boundaries. Provide psychoeducation to patients and families as it relates to the patient care plan.

Serve as a behavioral health expert and advocate for the patient, assisting other disciplines as needed for emotionally, mentally, and physically safe interactions.

Lead and facilitate therapeutic groups in all areas of care that align with the organization and team goals for programming and patient outcomes.

Lead and facilitate multi-family psychoeducation sessions on assigned topics to promote family awareness, engagement, and understanding.


Licenses and Certifications Registered Behavior Technician - Behavior Analyst Certification Board - upon hire - Required Certification in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention - Crisis Prevention Institute - within 3 months - Required Basic Life Support (BLS) - issued through an organization that requires hands-on instructor-led psychomotor skills verification (e.g., American Heart Association or Red Cross) - within 3 months - Required

Education Associate's Degree Required Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Social Work, Human Sciences, Recreational Therapy, or similar field of study. Preferred

Experience At least three (3) years of work experience providing care and support to patients in a behavioral health setting Required Pediatric behavioral health experience preferred Preferred
