Primary Role:

Under the guidance of the Principal(s) and the Director of Special Education, I am responsible for delivering educational activities and experiences tailored for special education students, aiming to support their intellectual, emotional, physical, and social development. My role involves adapting or creating curricula, designing lessons suited to varying student abilities, and working in diverse educational settings as required.

Key Responsibilities:

Instructional Approaches:

  • Collaborate with students, parents, and educational staff to formulate Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) through the ARD Committee process for each designated student.
  • Implement educational, therapeutic, or skill enhancement programs, maintaining documented evidence of preparation as needed.
  • Design and apply suitable instructional methods, resources, and tools that reflect an understanding of the diverse learning styles and requirements of assigned students.
  • Work in partnership with classroom teachers to adapt standard curricula and assist special education students within mainstream classes.
  • Regularly participate in ARD Committee meetings.
  • Conduct evaluations of student learning preferences and utilize findings to plan educational activities.
  • Deliver subject matter in alignment with guidelines established by IEPs.
  • Employ a variety of teaching techniques and media to cater to the individual needs and abilities of each student.
  • Oversee and guide assignments for teacher aides and volunteers.
  • Incorporate technology into the educational process, staying updated with advancements in educational technology.

Student Development:

  • Carry out continuous assessments of student progress through both formal and informal evaluations.
  • Provide or oversee personal care, medical assistance, and feeding of students as specified in IEPs.
  • Take charge of extracurricular activities as assigned and facilitate approved external activities.
  • Act as a positive role model for students, reinforcing the mission of the educational institution.

Classroom Management:

  • Establish a classroom environment that promotes learning and is suitable for the physical, emotional, and social growth of students.
  • Manage student behavior and enforce discipline, including intervening in crisis situations and restraining students when necessary, in accordance with IEP and safety protocols.
  • Consult with classroom educators regarding student behavior management based on IEPs.
  • Collaborate with district and external resources to address the educational, social, medical, and personal needs of students.
  • Ensure the safety of students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Assist in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional resources.

Communication:

  • Maintain open lines of communication through meetings with students, parents, principals, and teachers.
  • Foster professional relationships and collaborate effectively with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Utilize effective communication skills to convey information accurately and clearly.

Professional Development:

  • Engage in staff development programs to enhance job-related skills.
  • Exhibit interest and initiative in professional growth.

Policy Adherence:

  • Stay informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies relevant to special education teachers.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all necessary reports, records, and documentation.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.

Supervisory Duties:

  • Oversee assigned teacher aides.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills:

Knowledge of:

  • Special needs of students in designated areas.
  • ARD Committee process and IEP goal setting and execution.
  • Curriculum and instructional methodologies.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills characterized by tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Methods for collecting and organizing data and information.
  • Operation of computers and relevant software.
  • District and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Applicable federal and state laws and requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with necessary endorsements for the assigned subject/level.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • At least one semester of student teaching or one year of approved internship.

  • Lifting/carrying 15-44 pounds.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, kneeling, pulling/pushing, reaching, repetitive hand motions, and prolonged use of computers.
  • Clear speaking abilities.
  • Occasional district-wide and state-wide travel.
  • Work occasional irregular hours and extended hours.
