About the Role:

The University of Chicago is seeking a highly skilled Associate Health Physicist to join its Radiation Safety Program and Laser Safety Program. The successful candidate will provide critical support to these programs, ensuring the safe management and disposal of radioactive materials, as well as overseeing the University's X-ray radiation program and laser safety program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Schedule and conduct surveys in research/medical center laboratories, package receipt areas, and other locations where radioactive material is used or stored.
  • Provide radiation safety precautions to therapy patients and their families during inpatient or outpatient procedures.
  • Conduct leak testing and inventory management of radioactive sealed sources.
  • Perform instrument calibration and quality control checks.
  • Deliver radiation safety training to University and Medical Center staff.
  • Help implement the laser safety program, including classifying laser systems, reviewing standard operating procedures, and conducting laser lab audits.
  • Conduct radiation safety surveys and audits in laboratories using radioactive materials or x-ray equipment.
  • Be part of the emergency response team and carry the on-call pager.
  • Assist the waste management program.

Requirements:

  • Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in a related field.
  • Knowledge and skills developed through experience in radiation protection.
  • Eligible to obtain certification for unescorted access to radioactive materials in quantities of concern.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related science field, strongly preferred with 2 years of experience in Radiation Protection.
  • Experience in laser safety program desired.
