Role Overview
The CERT Division of the SEI is looking for a qualified candidate to fill the position of Lead Malware Analysis Engineer within the Threat Analysis directorate.
The SEI operates as a federally funded research and development center at Carnegie Mellon University.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct reverse engineering of malicious software to support significant clients.
- Innovate and create new analytical techniques and tools.
- Identify and mitigate emerging and intricate security threats.
- Engage actively in the broader cybersecurity community.
Specific Duties Include:
- Perform comprehensive reverse engineering of malicious code and document findings in reports, presentations, and technical discussions.
- Design, prototype, and implement new analytical methods and tools.
- Identify and document high-impact, emerging, and complex active security threats.
- Collaborate with the broader security community through publications and presentations.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Extensive experience in technical writing.
- The ability to manage confidential and sensitive information responsibly.
- Adaptability to shifting priorities.
- A passion for mentoring and sharing knowledge with others.
- Effective communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field with ten (10) years of relevant experience; or a Master’s degree with eight (8) years of experience; or a PhD with five (5) years of experience.
Additional Requirements
- Willingness to travel to various locations as needed to support the SEI's mission, including sponsor sites and conferences.
- Ability to pass a background check and maintain an active Department of Defense security clearance.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in reverse engineering software binaries using tools such as IDA Pro and NSA Ghidra.
- Experience with debuggers like x32dbg, x64dbg, gdb, and WinDbg.
- Familiarity with hex editors and binary analysis tools.
- Strong knowledge of C/C++, low-level programming, and computer architecture.
- Experience in Python or Java development.
