Position Overview:

The Fiber Optic Technician is responsible for the installation and maintenance of FTTP, FTTDP, FTTN/FTTLA systems, including performing emergency repairs and new installations. Candidates must be open to travel, participate in on-call duties, and exhibit self-motivation, teamwork, and diligence. Key responsibilities include maintaining the broadband network with a focus on fiber optic cable splicing and troubleshooting. Technicians will prepare and splice fiber using various techniques, diagnose issues with optical testing equipment, and manage cables ranging from single fiber to 288 counts, including executing ring cuts when necessary.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct testing and activation of subscriber connections in both indoor and outdoor environments; perform power meter assessments; and complete additional assigned tasks.
  • Execute a variety of tasks to establish cross-connects on fiber distribution frames and test fiber optic cables using OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometers) and Power Meter and Source.
  • Perform various duties related to the installation and upkeep of fiber broadband network equipment.
  • Engage in fiber optic splicing tasks, including fusion splicing and preparing splice closures during designated maintenance periods.
  • Identify and locate underground fiber-optic cables.
  • Maintain accurate records of daily activities, including material usage and maintenance logs.
  • Handle tasks associated with splicing cut sheets and diagrams.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance on the fiber network (both aerial and underground), including regular inspections, vegetation management, and re-hanging splice closures.
  • Ensure buildings and grounds are safe, presentable, and in good condition.
  • Safely operate bucket trucks, climb ladders, and utilize other equipment following safety protocols.
  • Perform minor preventive maintenance on assigned vehicles.
Qualifications:
  • Completion of fiber splicing training, including knowledge of light transmission through fiber and experience with optical time-domain reflectometers (OTDRs), basic networking, and fusion splicing.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 80% of the month, which may involve 2-5 days of travel weekly, with accommodations for overnight stays and per diem.
  • Overtime work is a requirement for this position.
  • Comfortable with an on-call schedule and night maintenance duties.
  • Basic understanding of computer applications, smartphones, electrical systems, and electronics.
  • Knowledge of fundamental safety practices.
  • Effective communication skills with colleagues across various departments in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Able to convey technical information to non-technical individuals.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks effectively.
  • Physical capability to lift up to 100 pounds and frequently carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
