Drinking Water Specialist Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled Drinking Water Specialist to join our team at UMass Amherst. As a Research Fellow-Safe Drinking Water Facilitator, you will play a critical role in supporting the development and implementation of Drinking Water Programs in Massachusetts.
This exciting opportunity allows you to collaborate with public water systems, MassDEP regional offices, and other stakeholders to address pressing drinking water concerns, such as lead and copper rule revisions and PFAS regulations. Your technical expertise and excellent communication skills will enable you to effectively engage with various audiences and drive positive change in the field of safe drinking water.
Responsibilities- Provide technical support to MassDEP regional offices (or Boston office) for Drinking Water Programs.
- Review and analyze public water system Service Line Inventories and Lead Service Line Replacement Plans.
- Assist public water systems in implementing replacement plans, preparing financial assistance applications, and completing permits.
- Support MassDEP in developing technical guidance, procedures, and programs for future PFAS regulation changes.
- Perform quality assurance and control reviews of laboratory reports to inform compliance determinations.
- Facilitate public outreach and education efforts to promote compliance with MassDEP requirements.
- Discuss water quality results and remediation options with public water systems.
- Contribute to research on safe drinking water in Massachusetts, focusing on lead service line inventory and replacement planning, PFAS, sanitary surveys, cybersecurity, and support for small and disadvantaged community water systems.
- Collaborate with students and faculty on related research projects.
- Develop training materials for public water system operators' continuing education.
- Prepare reports for regular meetings/calls with UMass and MassDEP staff to discuss Program progress and achievements.
- Respond to inquiries about technical assistance programs.
- Coordinate research and outreach projects with University faculty and personnel, consultants, and grant sponsors.
Requirements
A Bachelor's degree is required, or an Associate's Degree plus two years of qualifying experience, or a high school degree/GED/HiSet plus four years of qualifying experience. Relevant fields include environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology, or public health.
Familiarity with state and federal environmental regulations, including Safe Drinking Water Act programs, is essential. Specific expertise in lead in drinking water, PFAS, and/or domain areas supporting water systems (e.g., sanitary surveys, cybersecurity, water quality data, funding applications) is also required.
Excellent communication and organizational skills are necessary, as well as the ability to work effectively with facilities, staff, and stakeholders. Basic computer and communication skills are required.
