The Timber Operations Supervisor role will oversee wood flow services, managing timber extraction, transportation, and production, alongside long-term supply contracts. This position also involves some land stewardship responsibilities, including support for timber assessment projects, timber sale planning, and overseeing forest management activities and contractors.

Expect a commitment of at least 40 hours per week, with a vehicle provided for work-related travel. Occasional out-of-town and overnight assignments may be necessary (expenses covered), and participation in a 401(k) plan is available after six months of employment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct all facets of fieldwork, administrative tasks, and reporting.
  • Collaborate closely with Field Service Providers.
  • Implement annual harvesting strategies to optimize client revenue.
  • Oversee logging contractors and harvesting operations on client properties.
  • Plan timber sales.
  • Facilitate pre-harvest meetings to discuss landing sites, sale planning, compliance with Best Management Practices (BMP), roadwork, stream crossings, and all regulatory and contractual obligations.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with markets and specifications for harvested products.
  • Understand local, state, and federal regulations related to timber harvesting.
  • Be knowledgeable about markets for all products harvested from client lands, including sawmills, pulp mills, pole mills, and higher-value markets.
  • Exhibit strong negotiation skills to secure the best returns for the land base at mill locations.
  • Identify and mark streamside management zones (SMZs) in accordance with state BMPs.
  • Forecast weekly logging output for our clients and mills receiving shipments from AFM client lands.
  • Demonstrate strong analytical skills; proficient in Excel, Word, and mapping software.
  • Prepare reports, assist in budgeting, and draft timber harvesting and cut-and-haul contracts.
  • Conduct timber harvesting inspections and reports to ensure compliance with contracts.
  • Organize and audit timber sale settlements for reconciliation with logger load sheets.
  • Monitor security load sheets, load tags, proper separation, and all harvested products.
  • Communicate effectively and negotiate with loggers, mill foresters, clients, peers, the public, and local government entities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry with 7+ years of procurement experience.
  • Registered Forester in at least one state or must obtain registration within three years.
  • Experience managing Timber Supply Agreements is advantageous.
  • Maintain a clean driving record.
  • Ability to supervise staff.
  • Strong computer and analytical capabilities.
  • Excellent organizational and scheduling skills.
  • Quickly learn local market dynamics.
  • Coordinate wood flow requirements with various Field Service Suppliers.
  • Work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Maintain a positive demeanor.
  • Generate new business opportunities (meet with potential clients, explain our services, etc.).
  • Willingness to travel.
