Role Summary and Requirements

Position Summary: The Anesthesia Support Specialist exhibits technical expertise to assist the anesthesia provider (anesthesiologist) with the equipment and supplies utilized during anesthesia procedures. Responsibilities include the care and sanitation of operating room equipment, anesthesia apparatus, and surgical suites, all while functioning in a sterile environment. The Anesthesia Support Specialist may handle medications and must demonstrate a thorough understanding of proper medication management and storage, ensuring a secure medication environment. On-call duties are required based on departmental needs. Additional responsibilities may be assigned.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Adheres to hospital and departmental policies and procedures, including attendance, mandatory training, safety, and infection control.
  • Assesses equipment needs and ensures availability.
  • Respects patient rights by maintaining privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.
  • Exhibits ICARE standards consistently.
  • Recognizes and responds appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Participates in unit-specific educational sessions.
  • Attends a minimum of 80% of mandatory meetings and training sessions.
  • Reviews emails and other departmental communications.
  • Prepares for each procedure by ensuring adequate stock and appropriate equipment in designated areas.
  • Organizes tasks and utilizes time effectively.
  • Possesses strong telephone and organizational skills.
  • Strives to understand the step-by-step processes of specific surgical procedures related to anesthesia.
  • Ensures a safe environment for surgical patients by checking the condition and functionality of anesthesia equipment before and after surgeries.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the specific uses of all equipment and supplies related to anesthesia cases.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating manuals, and maintenance guidelines.
  • Manages intra-operative tasks under the guidance of the anesthesiologist.
  • Anticipates the needs of the operating room and anesthesia staff.
  • Assists with arterial lines, central lines, blocks, and intubations as necessary.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and adherence to procedures for managing patients undergoing specific anesthesia-related procedures.
  • Takes responsibility for supply and equipment management in accordance with departmental standards.
  • Assists in the maintenance of instruments and equipment through proper usage, cleaning, care, and sterilization.
  • Identifies and reports any damaged or unsafe equipment.
  • Helps with post-procedure cleaning and preparation of the operating room for subsequent procedures.
  • Assists in operating room turnovers after cases are completed.
  • Exhibits knowledge of anesthesia equipment.
Qualifications:
  • Current Certification of Anesthesia Technician preferred. Current BLS Certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • High school diploma or GED. Graduation from an accredited anesthesia technician program is required.
  • A minimum of one year of experience as an Anesthesia Technician; 2-3 years preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic to advanced knowledge in the scrub role across multiple surgical specialties.
  • Demonstrates strong organizational skills.
  • Communicates positively and professionally with all internal and external stakeholders.
  • Authorized to handle medications on the sterile field, including syringes and needles, and accountable to the registered nurse for oversight of this practice.
  • Must demonstrate an understanding of national patient safety initiatives by strictly adhering to all safety protocols and procedures as required by both HCA and Rose Medical Center.
