Position Overview:

The Assistant Head Sommelier plays a pivotal role in assisting the Head Sommelier in the development and management of an extensive wine and sake program, aimed at enriching the dining experience for our patrons. This position involves engaging with guests to provide tailored wine selections, ensuring exceptional service standards, and contributing to the overall success of our beverage offerings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Head Sommelier to curate a diverse and comprehensive wine list that aligns with Zuma's culinary vision.
  • Assist guests in selecting wines and sake by providing personalized recommendations that consider their tastes, budget, and menu choices.
  • Work closely with the culinary team to create wine pairing suggestions that enhance the dining experience and drive beverage sales.
  • Ensure adherence to wine service protocols, maintaining high standards for storage, handling, and presentation.
  • Conduct training sessions for staff to enhance their knowledge of wine and sake, covering topics such as varietals, production techniques, and service best practices.
  • Perform regular inventory checks to maintain optimal stock levels and report any discrepancies.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and emerging wine regions to continuously improve the beverage program.
  • Uphold Zuma's service standards, including uniform and grooming guidelines.
  • Participate in pre-shift meetings to stay informed about menu updates and enhance service delivery.
  • Act with integrity to uphold the company's reputation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Preferred certification as a Sommelier or higher, with a strong understanding of wine regions and service techniques.
  • Experience in a fine dining environment or upscale restaurant is essential.
  • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to engage with guests professionally.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced setting.
  • Team-oriented mindset with a commitment to fostering a positive work atmosphere.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform essential job functions in compliance with relevant standards.
  • Capability to lift and carry items up to 25 lbs and stand for extended periods.
