MARINE OPERATIONS LABORER

This role involves performing essential labor tasks to assist marine and shipyard functions.

Physical and Mental Job Requirements:

All roles necessitate climbing onto the tops of barges (approximately six feet high), managing barge lids that can weigh up to 125 lbs. (Note: Employees are encouraged to seek help when lifting heavy items), and safely navigating surfaces that may be wet or occasionally snow-covered. Additionally, employees are often required to ascend ladders and steps up to 25 feet and traverse long distances during their shifts. Walkways are typically narrow (around 2 feet wide), demanding good balance and coordination.

Work environments can be tight and enclosed, limiting available space at times. All positions require proficient eye-hand coordination for detailed tasks. Employees must be capable of wearing personal protective equipment, including life vests, safety footwear, protective clothing, dust masks, and hearing protection.

Conditions are frequently dusty, with temperature extremes depending on the season. Work surfaces may be slippery and hazardous at times. Individuals must be able to hear safety signals (such as horns, whistles, and spoken instructions) and comprehend safety manuals and other written materials like labels, warnings, gauges, and machinery instrumentation.

The position requires effective written communication skills to complete daily reports. Strong verbal communication is also essential for giving and receiving instructions via radio, loudspeakers, or face-to-face. Knowledge of hand signals is necessary. The role demands the ability to remember and adhere to established procedures for operating various diesel and gas engines, generators, compressors, and winches utilized in operations.

Specific Requirements for Welder/Fitter Positions:

  • Operation of arc welders and cutting torches, involving repeated bending, squatting, and manual dexterity for precise cutting and welding tasks.
  • Ability to wear personal protective devices such as safety glasses, protective clothing, and headgear.
  • Lifting and transporting steel components and fittings weighing between 50 to 60 pounds.
  • Utilization of sledgehammers and other handheld tools.

Specific Requirements for Barge Cleaning Positions:

  • Lifting, carrying, and positioning pumps weighing up to 125 lbs. (Note: Employees are instructed to seek assistance when lifting heavy objects).
  • Moving and transporting hoses weighing up to 70 lbs. by pulling, tugging, and dragging them over long distances.
  • Lifting buckets of material hand over hand from a standing position, with these buckets loaded with materials.
