Research Scientist - RF Researcher

We are seeking a highly skilled Research Scientist to join our team at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). As a Research Scientist, you will be responsible for designing, prototyping, and characterizing novel electromagnetic surfaces and devices for manipulating microwave and radio-frequency fields.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop novel engineered surfaces and devices for manipulating RF fields
  • Use computational electromagnetic (CEM) tools, such as CST and COMSOL, for simulation and optimization of engineered RF surfaces
  • Develop custom software to interface with CEM tools and analyze data
  • Configure and operate RF systems composed of antennas, vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, and signal generators to characterize novel RF structures
  • Participate in anechoic chamber measurements and devise RF testbeds to characterize the performance of electromagnetic prototypes
Qualifications:
  • PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related fields
  • Strong background in electromagnetics, microwave circuits, and RF electronics
  • Proficiency in using CEM tools, such as CST or COMSOL
  • 1+ year working experience in configuring and operating typical RF hardware equipment
  • Working knowledge of or interest in learning the procedures and protocols pertaining to the fabrication of engineered electromagnetic surfaces
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in printed circuit board layout and fabrication
  • Interest in building systems with RF components
  • Previous contribution to the design of electromagnetic metasurfaces or reconfigurable intelligent surfaces

We offer a competitive salary range of $90,000 to $330,000 annually, depending on experience.
