Cardiac Care Nurse

Job Summary:
Brown University Health is seeking a skilled Registered Nurse to join our team in providing exceptional patient care in a clinical cardiology setting. As a key member of our healthcare team, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality care to patients with cardiac conditions, working closely with physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure the best possible outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Aid providers in the provision of patient care to a specific patient population, including cardiac stress tests, anticoagulation management, and patient education.
- Assist with the management of patient calls to the practice, including taking direct patient calls and triaging calls to the appropriate physician or other provider within the practice.
- Provide information to patients regarding diagnostic test results and confirm scheduled appointments.
- Triage and track patients with acute problems, making appropriate preparations and alerts as needed.
- Obtain and interpret a health history for patients seen in the clinic setting, reviewing laboratory and radiology test results and notifying providers of same.
- Modify nursing care plans as appropriate, monitoring patient care when physicians or LIPs are not able to remain with the patient.
- Provide necessary nursing intervention as appropriate, including administering medications, starting IVs, and performing procedures such as EKGs and PPDs.
- Manage patients receiving anticoagulation according to established protocol orders, providing education to patients and families.
- Provide telephone or on-site clinical advice to patients regarding treatment of certain minor acute problems related to cardiac care, following established telephone guidelines and protocols.
- Maintain adequate supplies of department stock medications, reordering as appropriate and within level of authority.
- Provide patient and family teaching, including medications, use of hand nebulizers, diabetic teaching, wound care, and other relevant topics, in accordance with standards and patient teaching guidelines.
- Document activities into medical records in accordance with policy and procedure.
- Communicate relevant patient data to the healthcare team verbally and/or in the medical record, ensuring maintenance of patient confidentiality.
- Assist in coordinating administrative and clinical issues related to following nursing home patients and patients receiving home care, including facilitating renewal of physician's orders and ensuring resources are utilized in a cost-effective manner.
- Coordinate communications received on patients from emergency rooms, health centers, and other agencies involved in the care process.
Requirements:
- Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
- Graduate of a school of nursing, Baccalaureate in Nursing preferred.
- Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island.
- Conformity to the Code of Professional Nurses and understanding of the provisions of the Nurse Practice Act of the state of Rhode Island.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
- Computer and typing skills necessary to navigate an electronic record and communicate effectively.
- Basic Life Support certification.
- Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification required, but may obtain within six months of hire.
- Between two to three years progressively more responsible related experience as a Registered Nurse within a patient care environment with expertise in the area of clinical cardiology.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
Healthcare environment such as physicians' medical office practice and ancillary healthcare enterprises. Works with medical office equipment and has direct patient contact. Any potential hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions, including use of safety equipment and protective clothing.
Independent Action:
Functions independently to carry out nursing care plans, but within scope of responsibility and authority to act.
