Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Electron Microscope Specialist to join our team at InsideHigherEd. As an Electron Microscope Specialist, you will play a critical role in the accurate and timely examination and preparation of specimens for clinical purposes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine and advanced transmission electron microscope laboratory procedures, ensuring high-quality results and adhering to strict quality control standards.
  • Prepare specimens for observation under an electron microscope using specialized techniques, such as ultramicrotomy and staining.
  • Maintain diamond knives and cut and trim tissue to microscope dimension using an ultramicrotome, ensuring precise and accurate results.
  • Perform specialized photographic techniques to capture and produce digital images, including immunofluorescence and immunochemistry.
  • Manage the digital archives of images and make images available electronically to users, ensuring seamless access and collaboration.
  • Maintain electron microscopes and ancillary equipment, performing routine maintenance and repairs to ensure optimal performance.
  • Assist with inventory control of chemicals and other supplies needed for diagnostic electron microscopy, ensuring timely ordering and restocking.
  • Maintain records and files of specimens prepared and photographed, ensuring accurate and up-to-date documentation.
  • Perform laboratory safety procedures and ensure compliance with quality control standards, maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.

Requirements:

  • A high school diploma and four years of appropriate experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Licensed as a Histology Technologist or certification by the Electron Microscopy Society of America, demonstrating expertise and knowledge in the field.
  • Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience, demonstrating relevant skills and knowledge.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in a gross room or histology lab, demonstrating familiarity with laboratory procedures and equipment.
  • Experience with Epic or other Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), ensuring seamless integration and data management.
  • Certification by the Electron Microscopy Society of America, demonstrating expertise and knowledge in the field.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) to maintain and operate TEM, fluorescent microscope, and related equipment, ensuring optimal performance and results.
  • KSAs to prepare TEM specimens for observation, observe and photograph TEM samples, interpret microscopy images, and prepare digital plates for clinical purposes, demonstrating expertise and knowledge in the field.
