Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Fish and Wildlife Technician Senior to join our team at the State of Oregon. As a key member of our department, you will play a critical role in coordinating and implementing the construction, installation, operation, and maintenance of fish screens in the East Region.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical assistance to landowners and other agencies concerned with fish protection associated with water diversions.
  • Serve the Oregon public by assisting water users in the Columbia River Basin of the East Region.
  • Assist the Project Leader with the planning, landowner contacts and agreements, construction, and administrative details necessary for successful completion of the construction phase of these projects and screens.
  • Devote a significant portion of each construction season overseeing and inspecting various screen construction projects and leasing screens.
  • Perform project operation, maintenance, and evaluation duties as provided with screens.
Requirements:
  • Two years and six months of fisheries or wildlife experience.
  • An Associate's degree in Fisheries Technology, Aquaculture or Aquarium Science, Wildlife Technology, or Agriculture.
  • Or, eighteen months of fisheries experience, care of livestock, agricultural research and experimentation, monitoring game or wildlife, or farming.
  • Or, a Bachelor's degree in Fisheries, Wildlife Science, or a closely-related Bachelor's degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework and one year of fisheries or wildlife experience.
Preferred Skills:
  • Operation and maintenance of vehicles, equipment, and hand and power tools to fabricate, maintain, or repair equipment and structures.
  • Evaluate long-term maintenance and repair needs and preparing relevant information.
  • General knowledge of the principles and operation of fish screens and fishways, including detailed knowledge of all state and federal criteria.
  • Maintenance and construction which relates to a variety of fish screen and passage components, metal work, form construction, and concrete work.
  • Read, interpret, and construct using blueprints or engineered designs.
Working Conditions:
  • Occasional exposure to adverse weather conditions.
  • Frequent travel, often involving long and odd hours.
  • Maintenance construction work in and around water.
  • Occasional use of trucks and backhoes, frequent use of hand and power tools, including welders.
  • Fish screen fabrication, repair, and installation will occasionally require lifting up to 50 pounds of steel.
  • The maintenance and repair of fish screens will occasionally require carrying of tools and supplies up to one half mile at some screen sites.
  • Performs duties independently with minimal supervision.
  • This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek.
  • This position requires the possession of a Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL), tanker endorsement, and applicants must pass the air brake knowledge and skill test.
