ROLE OVERVIEW

As a vital member of the power plant operations and maintenance team, the Senior Power Plant Engineer will provide technical engineering expertise and insights into power plant operations and maintenance systems. This role involves overseeing the execution of a new change management framework, enhancing asset tracking processes, and supporting the operations and maintenance team in achieving top-tier plant availability metrics.

This position reports directly to the Plant Manager and collaborates closely with the Operations and Maintenance Supervisor and the Maintenance Planner on a daily basis.

The Senior Power Plant Engineer will also lead necessary re-engineering of plant systems (Continuous Improvement) and manage quality control and assurance processes for all activities conducted on operational assets.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Standardize troubleshooting methodologies utilizing root cause analysis and provide training for plant personnel.
  • Develop and implement a formal change management protocol and train plant staff accordingly.
  • Enhance and manage a new drawing and asset record system.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in plant assets and systems, leveraging subject matter experts as needed.
  • Facilitate a collaborative design review process and lead the re-engineering of plant systems as necessary.

METRICS DEVELOPMENT:

Establish performance metrics for the maintenance of critical systems/assets:

  • Measure, track, and report mean time between failures, setting targets for repairs/replacements to minimize unscheduled downtime.
  • Monitor and trend vibration data on essential equipment.
  • Assess the condition of transformers, MCCs, motors, gearboxes, etc.
  • Develop a system to monitor and track high-wear items throughout the plant to optimize their life cycles.

Track and report mean time to repair, setting targets to improve outage scheduling accuracy.


ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist the Operations and Maintenance team in managing a prioritized list of planned major maintenance and capital projects.
  • Guide the Maintenance Planner in prioritizing forced outage tasks.
  • Collaborate with Operations to enhance operational and maintenance procedures.
  • Provide leadership in optimizing inventory and identifying critical spare parts.
  • Work with the Maintenance Planner to ensure completion of Bill of Material for all major plant assets.
  • Support the Plant Manager in preparing the annual budget.
  • Perform other relevant duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Post-secondary education in an Engineering discipline or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
