Job Summary

The UCLA Department of Design Media Arts (DMA) is seeking an experienced Department Manager to oversee the administrative and financial operations of the department. The successful candidate will provide strategic support to the Chair and faculty, ensuring the effective management of departmental services, staff, and facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement short- and long-term strategic plans to achieve departmental goals and objectives.
  • Provide administrative and fiscal oversight of department services, staff, and facilities, ensuring compliance with university policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate programs, including summer institutes and summer sessions, student and alumni activities, and other departmental events.
  • Manage budgets, staffing, and resources, making informed decisions to optimize departmental performance.
  • Serve as an administrative liaison with the Dean's Office, clarifying departmental goals and objectives.
Requirements
  • 5 years of experience in arts management or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Ability to analyze complex administrative and organizational issues, problems, practices, and procedures.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of government general/fund accounting and business practices.
  • Financial skills sufficient to calculate ratios and rates, determine current year costs, provide financial projections, and understand indirect costs allocations.
  • Writing and editing skills sufficient to produce professional, clear, and literate proposals and supporting materials.
  • Ability to articulate information in a one-to-one basis, using appropriate vocabulary and grammar.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and follow through on assignments with minimal direction.
  • Skill in interacting with persons of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Ability to effectively supervise staff, student workers, and volunteers.
  • Demonstrated skill in operating a personal computer, using word processing, spreadsheet, and database formats required by the department.
  • Background in the visual arts or design (preferred).
  • Familiarity with administration of academic personnel in a research university setting, as well as experience with standard UCLA systems (preferred).
Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations
  • Bachelor's Degree in the Arts or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

  • CANRA: The position is designated as a mandatory reporter under CANRA.
