Peer Recovery Coach

Join Inova Health System as a Peer Recovery Specialist and play a vital role in supporting individuals in their recovery journey from substance use and mental health issues.
About the Role:The Peer Recovery Specialist will work collaboratively with the Emergency Department team to provide non-clinical services and support the screening and follow-up process for patients at risk of dependent alcohol and drug use problems.
Key Responsibilities:- Provide motivational support to educate and encourage patients to use prevention and intervention methods addressing emerging substance risk.
- Participate as an interdisciplinary team member to assist in completing referrals to treatment services and developing service plans promoting successful linkage to treatment services.
- Respond to Emergency Department consults in a timely manner, complete secondary screens to evaluate patient needs, and conduct brief interventions to patients who screen positive for alcohol and/or drug use.
- Identify patient's history of drug/alcohol use, treatment history, motivation to change behavior, and other needs for community support services.
- Engage patients at the bedside and conduct motivational interviewing to understand patient barriers and direct patients to the appropriate level of care.
- Assist patients and families with understanding how to utilize community services and provide them with recovery support materials.
- Provide recovery coaching to clients regarding their symptoms and the effects of trauma and trauma history, and help them develop positive coping skills and linkages to obtain and stay in treatment.
- Work with Emergency Department staff and Behavioral Health team to identify community support services, link patients to community support services and substance treatment services, including securing appointments and transportation.
- Provide outreach services as requested to educate the community on addiction and how to access treatment.
- Telephone treatment providers to verify patient attendance at appointments and follow up with patients who miss appointments.
- High School or GED
- Department of Behavioral Health and Development Services Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (DBHDS-CPRS)
- Basic Life Support - American Heart Association within three (3) months of hire
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) within six (6) months of hire
