Position Summary:

The Detroit Public Schools Community District is seeking a dedicated individual to fill the year-round Facilities Maintenance Specialist position. The ideal candidate will be committed to ensuring a clean and safe environment for students across various school facilities.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent GED certificate required.
  • In the absence of a valid Michigan (Interim) Occupation Education Certificate, candidates must possess a minimum of five (5) years of relevant industry experience, with experience within the last two years.
  • Must demonstrate a student-centered approach and contribute to a positive learning atmosphere, including:
  • Proficiency in operating custodial equipment and floor care machinery.
  • Strong communication abilities.
  • Adaptability and willingness to learn new tasks and responsibilities.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to read and comprehend safety information related to chemical usage and storage.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Work Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend hours to support community events.
  • Maintain cleanliness of classrooms and offices, including dusting, sanitizing surfaces, and replenishing supplies.
  • Ensure all restrooms are thoroughly cleaned and stocked with necessary supplies.
  • Secure all doors and gates, ensuring alarms are activated.
  • Conduct weekly quality inspections with the Lead Facilities Coordinator.
  • Address conditions that may attract pests and work towards their elimination.
  • Familiarize oneself with the responsibilities of all custodial roles within the district to provide coverage as needed.
  • Complete assigned duties as per daily, weekly, monthly, and annual schedules.
  • Perform minor maintenance tasks as directed.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the building and surrounding areas at all times.
  • Report any damage to school property to the appropriate authority.
  • Execute minor repairs and promptly inform the Lead Facilities Coordinator of major repair needs.
  • Respond to service requests in a courteous and timely manner.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student and staff information.
  • Foster a supportive and caring environment for staff, students, and community members.
  • Undertake additional tasks as assigned by the Lead Facilities Coordinator or Operations Leadership.
  • Perform general custodial duties including cleaning, lifting, sweeping, trash collection, and grounds maintenance.
  • Adhere to all health and safety protocols, including Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan requirements, and maintain annual training in relevant areas.
  • Fulfill other job-related responsibilities as directed by the Lead Facilities Coordinator or designated authority.
Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants: Current employees of the Detroit Public Schools Community District are not required to undergo a new security clearance unless the new role necessitates a different type of background check.

External Applicants: In compliance with Michigan law, candidates selected for this position will be required to undergo a criminal background check as part of the hiring process.
