Position Overview
The Senior Commodity Buyer is responsible for the procurement of raw materials and the management of inventories for designated commodities, ensuring the efficient production of finished goods. This role involves overseeing a substantial spend and contributing to key manufacturing metrics, including safety, quality, cost, and service.
Key Responsibilities
- Procure chemicals essential for tannery operations, facilitating the production of high-quality leather.
- Maintain optimal inventory levels through the MRP system, aligning with forecasts and safety stock requirements to meet production schedules.
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the chemical commodities sector, including major suppliers and cost drivers.
- Collaborate with planning teams and other stakeholders to swiftly address and resolve operational challenges.
- Ensure adherence to material management programs and procurement protocols among business partners.
- Evaluate vendor performance and the effectiveness of purchasing processes, recommending improvements as necessary.
- Lead initiatives for the development and implementation of inventory management systems with suppliers.
- Provide guidance on inventory assessments and adjustments, including cycle counting and year-end evaluations.
- Identify and pursue opportunities for process enhancements related to this role.

- Engage in process improvement initiatives within and beyond the department.
- Enhance technical knowledge through participation in educational workshops and training programs.

Qualifications
Applicants should possess an associate degree in Inventory Management, Supply Chain Management, or a related field, along with 4 to 7 years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other computer applications.
- Effective negotiation and influencing capabilities.
- Organizational and analytical skills with a results-oriented mindset.
- Prior experience in purchasing or production planning, preferably in the leather industry.
Certifications
APICS certification is preferred, or candidates must be willing to obtain it within 2 to 3 years of employment. Certification as a purchasing manager is also desirable.
