Highway and Parks Maintenance Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and physically fit individual to join our team as a Highway and Parks Maintenance Specialist. As a key member of our department, you will be responsible for performing a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance, repair, and construction of roadways, roadsides, bridges, parks, recreation areas, and public grounds.
Key Responsibilities- Operate trucks and various equipment used in the performance of the job, including tractors, mowers, wood chippers, drills, paint sprayers, spreaders, saws, jackhammers, compressors, cement mixers, snowplows, and other equipment.
- Perform grading and tree removal on roadside projects, parks, recreation centers, and other areas.
- Clean gutters and catch basins, sweep streets, dig ditches and holes, erect poles and highway signs, shovel materials such as sand, stone, and dirt, rake fill and loam.
- Perform utility painting, including post, fence, roadway markings, line striping, and other tasks.
- Assist skilled workers and perform simple masonry and cement finishing, pipe laying, carpentry, and other tasks.
- May serve as a helper or trainee welder, painter, electrician, mechanic, plumber, mason, or carpenter.
- Work at the Town's transfer station/disposal area as required.
- Perform any related task of Highway Maintainer II or Park Maintainer II, working in all types of weather.
- High School Graduate or equivalent.
- At least two years of employment as a laborer in the field of construction, landscape property maintenance, or one year of apprenticeship in one of the construction trades.
- Ability to lift at least 80 lbs.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Knowledge of physical properties of standard construction materials.
- Knowledge of mechanical principles.
- Ability to use and make minor repairs to small tools and simple mechanical equipment.
- Ability to operate truck and construction equipment.
- Current valid Connecticut CDL, Class B, with Manual Transmission and Air Brake Endorsements, or ability to obtain within 180 probationary period.
