Job Summary

Bering Straits Native Corporation (BSNC) is seeking a highly skilled Legislative Affairs Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our organization, you will play a critical role in promoting, coordinating, and managing administrative tasks related to our legislative efforts in the South and Central Asian region.

Key Responsibilities
  • Scheduling and Coordination: Schedule meetings and contacts with Members of Congress and their staff, ensuring timely and effective communication.
  • Policy Development: Prepare and coordinate briefing materials for bureau officials to use in contacts with Members of Congress and their staff, providing critical support for policy development and implementation.
  • Legislative Tracking: Maintain an internal tracking system of legislative taskers, key congressional committees, and staffers, ensuring clear communication with the SCA front office, regional desks, embassies, and other stakeholders on legislative issues.
  • Strategic Planning: Create and implement legislative strategies to advance our funding requests and other strategic policy initiatives, working closely with other elements of SCA to monitor developments in key committees related to South and Central Asia.
  • Representation: Represent the office and SCA Bureau, as necessary, at meetings within the Department and in negotiations with other agencies, foreign governments, and non-governmental organizations on various issues, with a particular focus on devising new ways to advance legislative priorities for the South and Central Asia bureau.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of foreign policies, excellent communication and organizational skills, ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Employees must always maintain a constant state of mental alertness.
Work Environment

The job is performed in an office setting with exposure to computer screens and requires extensive use of a computer, keyboard, mouse, and multi-line telephone system. Occasional travel may be required.

Additional Qualifying Factors
  • Clearance: As a condition of employment, you will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening and have acceptable background check results. If applicable to the contract, you must also obtain the appropriate clearance levels required and be able to obtain access to military installations.
  • Shareholder Preference: BSNC gives hiring, promotion, training, and retention preference to BSNC shareholders, shareholder descendants, and shareholder spouses who meet the minimum qualifications for the job.
