The Office of the General Counsel is responsible for delivering strategic legal guidance and support across various departments. The selected candidate will assume the role of Associate General Counsel, reporting directly to the General Counsel. This position requires a versatile attorney capable of managing diverse legal and policy matters while developing expertise in specific areas of law. Given the office's compact size and extensive responsibilities, the Associate General Counsel will need to demonstrate strong organizational skills and sound judgment in handling a wide array of legal issues.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee legal matters related to employment law, immigration, and export controls.
  • Provide legal counsel to various departments on employee grievances and contractual issues.
  • Conduct training sessions for staff on relevant legal topics.
  • Represent the organization in collective bargaining negotiations.
  • Manage legal cases and provide ongoing legal advice on employment-related matters.
  • Participate in committees and meetings as required.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned by the General Counsel.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited ABA law school.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in higher education law, employment law, or a related field.
  • Eligibility for admission to the Iowa Bar within one year of employment.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in a higher education environment.
  • Strong understanding of legal and operational issues in public universities.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficient in legal research, problem-solving, and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage competing priorities.
  • Commitment to ethical standards and professional integrity.
  • Willingness to develop expertise in new areas of law.

Work Environment: The position is primarily office-based, with some flexibility for remote work within the state of Iowa. Occasional travel may be required for meetings or conferences.
