Job Title: Field Service Engineer

The Field Service Engineer is a critical role at Thorlabs, responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of our imaging systems product line. This position requires a strong understanding of the life science industry, laser, optics, and microscopy experience is preferred.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Install and service imaging systems, including confocal and multiphoton microscopes.
  • Develop and implement programs for after-sales installation, preventive maintenance, and service contracts.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to improve internal and external service reporting.
  • Execute preventive maintenance programs for existing customers.
  • Promote service contracts to customers.
  • Document field service activities.
  • Improve customer response time.
  • Assist with system installation and evaluation for tradeshows.
Requirements:
  • Entry-level to 4 years of hands-on experience aligning, maintaining, and servicing optical equipment, including lasers and microscopes.
  • Prior field service experience.
  • Direct customer relationship experience.
Education:
  • BS in Engineering Technology, EE, Biomedical Science, Physics, or equivalent.
  • Technical school/military experience considered.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
  • Proficient in Windows-based PC machine use, especially MS Office and other communication tools.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills.
  • Strong business acumen.
  • Understanding of customer/marketplace and drivers that influence customer behavior.
  • Strong problem-solving/analysis skills related to field service.
Other:
  • Must be willing to travel 75% of the time.
