Job Summary

USAA is seeking an experienced Executive Director of Life Underwriting to lead our Life Company underwriting team. The successful candidate will have a strong background in life insurance underwriting, with a focus on medical, non-medical, and financial underwriting principles and practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and implementation of underwriting policies and procedures to support the Chief Life Underwriter and other senior executives.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Life Underwriter to oversee and facilitate the transformation of the underwriting process to create sustainable and delightful member experiences.
  • Provide day-to-day supervision and management support for the Life Company underwriting department.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including reinsurance and business partners.
  • Build and lead a team of underwriting professionals responsible for results delivery through recruiting, development, retention, coaching, and performance management.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree or 4 years of related experience may be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • 10 years of life insurance underwriting experience with in-depth understanding of medical, non-medical, and financial underwriting principles and practices.
  • 4 years of people leadership experience in a life insurance underwriting function to include building, managing, and/or developing high-performing teams.
  • Executive-level business acumen in the areas of underwriting policy, innovation, and life insurance industry practices, emerging trends, major issues, and regulatory considerations.
  • Fellow of the Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU) and Fellow of the Life Management Institute (FLMI).
