Job Overview:
The Collector I acts as the primary liaison for the organization in engaging with insurance providers, governmental payers, and patients to facilitate the resolution of outstanding payments and account issues.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage assigned accounts within designated work queues efficiently.
- Maximize reimbursement by assessing claims against contract rates using contract management tools.
- Initiate appeals for underpayments while adhering to timely filing requirements.
- Handle payor and patient correspondence promptly and accurately.
- Identify and escalate accounts requiring appeals due to billing or coding discrepancies.
- Report new or unclear billing edits to the supervisor for further action.
- Possess a comprehensive understanding of Revenue Cycle processes, from Patient Access through Patient Financial Services.
- Demonstrate thorough knowledge of managed care agreements, current payer rates, and applicable federal and state regulations.
- Interpret Explanation of Benefits (EOBs) and Electronic Remittance Advices (ERAs) to ensure correct payments.
- Understand hospital billing form requirements and be familiar with HCFA 1500 forms.
- Knowledge of various payor types including HMO, PPO, Medicare, and commercial payors.
- Utilize patient accounting systems effectively to document all interactions and actions taken.
- Accurately code insurance plan codes and establish payment arrangements for patients unable to pay in full.
- Review accounts for applicable cash rates and discounts.
- Handle bankruptcy and deceased patient accounts as necessary.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
The Collector I position requires consistent achievement of individual productivity and quality assurance metrics. In addition, the role may involve:
- Assisting in various areas, payors, or departments as needed.
- Contributing to special projects and additional tasks.
- Problem-solving issues and conducting independent research for resolutions.
- Providing support and training to peers as required.
- Exceeding productivity and quality standards over an extended period.
