LEAD GUIDANCE, NAVIGATION, AND CONTROL ENGINEER (STARLINK)
We are seeking experienced engineers with expertise in orbital mechanics, control systems, state estimation, spacecraft design, optimization, and software engineering to join our Starlink guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) team. Contribute to the development of autopilot algorithms for a vast network of satellites and user terminals, facilitating high-speed internet access globally.
Within the Starlink GNC team, there are various sub-teams focusing on distinct areas. Candidates will be matched with specific teams based on current hiring needs and qualifications. Responsibilities may include:
- Design and optimization of satellite constellations
- Management of satellite fleets and automation of orbit transfers, including the necessary software infrastructure
- Analysis of satellite systems at both constellation and network levels
- Collision avoidance strategies for satellites
- Determination and control of satellite attitudes
- Orbit control for satellites, including low thrust trajectory optimization and station-keeping
- Precision state estimation and control for various network payloads, such as RF antennas and laser inter-satellite links
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop reliable and efficient GNC algorithms, simulations, tools, services, and dashboards utilizing C++ or Python; our engineers produce actual production code rather than mere prototypes
- Engage in architecture, design, and code reviews
- Conduct bulk data analysis to evaluate performance metrics from various components of the Starlink constellation and network
- Create high-quality technical documentation for programs, algorithms, or analyses
- Participate in on-call operations, commanding satellites or analyzing network data to ensure optimal network performance
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, aerospace engineering, physics, or a related engineering field, along with 5+ years of professional experience in GNC
- Proficiency in software development using C++ or Python
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Preferred qualifications may vary based on the specific team within Starlink GNC.
- Master's degree or PhD in an engineering discipline or physics
- Experience in developing, debugging, and deploying software for real-world applications
- Innovative problem-solving skills, strong analytical abilities, and solid engineering fundamentals
- Experience in the full lifecycle development of three-axis stabilized spacecraft, including momentum, magnetic, and propulsive control
- In-depth knowledge of orbital mechanics, particularly low thrust trajectory optimization and station-keeping
- Experience in verifying GNC algorithm performance through simulation and validating simulation models
- Familiarity with state estimation techniques, including attitude and orbit determination, GNSS, and radio navigation
- Understanding of numerical collision probability methods
- General knowledge of spacecraft flight disciplines, including structures, propulsion, avionics, GNC, flight software, dynamics, launch, and mission operations, with practical experience in real-world development
- Able to identify and resolve complex issues with minimal supervision
- Passionate about advancing the commercial space sector
- Capable of thriving in a fast-paced, autonomous, and demanding startup environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as necessary
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
Salary range:
Lead GNC Engineer/Level 3: $160,000 - $220,000 per year
Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, education, and experience.
Base salary is just one component of your total rewards package at SpaceX. You may also qualify for long-term incentives, including company stock, stock options, or cash awards, as well as potential discretionary bonuses and the opportunity to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan. Comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage, access to a 401(k) retirement plan, short and long-term disability insurance, life insurance, paid parental leave, and various discounts and perks are also included. You will accrue three weeks of paid vacation and be eligible for ten or more paid holidays each year. Exempt employees are entitled to five days of sick leave annually.
