OBJECTIVE:
To embody and promote exceptional customer service across all job functions. Ensures delivery of high-quality products that surpass customer expectations. Possesses comprehensive knowledge of departmental operations and maintains sufficient fresh inventory levels. The General Merchandise Manager is chiefly accountable for inventory management, administrative documentation, and accurate record-keeping.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Fosters a vibrant customer-focused atmosphere with a strong emphasis on prompt and friendly service.
Assists customers with product recommendations.
Utilizes suggestive selling techniques through various communication channels including phone, in-store announcements, and direct customer interactions.
Handles incoming calls with professionalism and resolves customer issues effectively, escalating to the Store Director when necessary.
Oversees overall store operations in the absence of the Store Director (refer to Store Director job description).
Plans daily operations for the General Merchandise department, ensuring adherence to company protocols and profitability.
Creates attractive displays, rotates stock, and removes outdated or spoiled items. Maintains cleanliness and organization within the department.
Implements effective promotional strategies and seasonal displays.
Adheres to and maintains departmental standards and requirements.
Monitors team productivity and assesses overall performance.
Schedules staff to guarantee adequate coverage and service quality.
Possesses specific knowledge of all roles within the department, including opening and closing procedures.
Supervises, trains, and assigns tasks to department personnel.
Educates employees on store policies, sales techniques, and record-keeping practices.
Identifies and mentors employees with potential for career advancement.
Demonstrates understanding of company policies and guidelines as outlined in the employee handbook.
Ensures compliance with product code dating regulations.
Initiates personnel actions such as interviews, transfers, promotions, and disciplinary measures.
Prepares sales and inventory reports, conducting physical inventory assessments biannually.
Manages inventory to ensure product quality, quantity, and freshness, aligning with division directives. Stocks and rotates merchandise.
Orders general merchandise and maintains inventory levels as per division guidelines.

Supervises the reclamation process and maintains organized stock conditions in the backroom and all relevant areas.

Controls shrinkage and costs.
Utilizes equipment such as pallet jacks, hand trucks, and safety cutters.
Performs receiving duties including unloading shipments, verifying orders, inspecting quality, reporting discrepancies, and stocking products. Adheres to temperature and storage guidelines and follows proper packaging protocols. Completes administrative paperwork and maintains accurate records.
Accurately fills out daily logs, sales, labor reports, and other necessary documentation.
Ensures proper temperature maintenance for products. Complies with retail labeling laws, federal and state regulations, and company policies.
Adheres to all workplace safety standards and regulations.

Maintains safety, cleanliness, and sanitation in the work area, including compliance with code dating requirements.

Implements emergency protocols for equipment and software malfunctions.
Operates computer systems and electronic ordering tools for product procurement.
Participates in sales meetings, communicating sales targets, departmental performance, and opportunities for improvement to team members to ensure successful outcomes.
Complies with company grooming standards and dress code.
Responsible for executing all job functions safely, accurately, and with integrity.
Other necessary and relevant duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:
Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential, along with the ability to maintain professionalism with customers and colleagues.
A solid understanding of company practices and General Merchandise Department policies is required.
Ability to frequently lift and maneuver objects weighing up to approximately 50 lbs. Frequent bending, stooping, and reaching are necessary. Capable of pushing and pulling fully loaded hand trucks and pallet jacks. Engages in repetitive arm movements for product preparation, packaging, and display.
Manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination are crucial. Ability to stand for extended periods.
Mental alertness is necessary for the safe and accurate completion of tasks. Basic mathematical skills and knowledge of weights and measures are required. Familiarity with product variety, standards, perishability, handling, sanitation, labeling, and departmental policies is essential.
Operates telephones, pallet jacks, hand trucks, knives, scissors, and safety cutters. Utilizes cleaning supplies and equipment.
May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. Scheduled hours will vary. Good attendance is essential.
Potential hazards exist concerning equipment and tools necessary for job performance.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Typically operates in a temperature-controlled setting. Frequent exposure to refrigerated items at or around 35°.
Occasional travel, including overnight stays, may be necessary.
