DEPARTMENT CHAIR OF INTERNAL MEDICINE
Dignity Health Medical Group, Arizona (DHMG-AZ) is seeking a distinguished academic physician leader to take on the role of Chair for the Department of Medicine. We are looking for a well-rounded and collaborative clinician who possesses extensive administrative expertise and a deep commitment to research, education, and community engagement. The ideal candidate will excel in establishing and nurturing relationships with faculty, while also fostering positive connections with organizational and community stakeholders.
The Department Chair will hold primary responsibility for the overall performance of the DHMG-AZ Department of Medicine, focusing on enhancing the quality of clinical care, education, and scholarly activities. This individual will collaborate with DHMG-AZ leadership to strategically outline the future growth and development of the Department, its healthcare service lines, and the execution of educational initiatives. Furthermore, this role will act as a liaison for quality and cost-effective initiatives between the Dignity Health Medical Group and Dignity Health Arizona.
The DHMG-AZ Department of Medicine comprises 78 physicians and 16 advanced practitioners, playing a vital role in the academic framework across the Phoenix metropolitan area. The department is organized into 8 Divisions, including Cardiology, Critical Care Medicine, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, General Internal Medicine, Hospitalist, Infectious Disease, and Palliative/Pain. The leaders of these Divisions will report directly to the Chair. The Department's reach extends across the Phoenix metropolitan area, providing both ambulatory and hospital services.
In partnership with Creighton University School of Medicine - Phoenix, as Co-Academic Chair, this physician will support the following educational programs:
- Internal Medicine Residency Program, 96 residents
- Gastroenterology Fellowship, 6 fellows
- Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship, 12 fellows
- Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship, 1 fellow
- Student rotations, including M3 clerkship, M4 electives, PA student rotations
In collaboration with Dignity Health East Valley (DHEV) hospitals, as Academic Chair, this physician will support the following educational programs:
- Internal Medicine Residency Program, anticipating 39 residents
- Student rotations

This partnership ensures that residents, fellows, and students gain essential patient-care experience in prominent Phoenix facilities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Serve as a senior physician leader within DHMG-AZ
- Promote a collaborative practice model to enhance the success of the Dignity Health Medical Group
- Develop and implement quality metrics, financial incentives, practice guidelines, and strategic growth plans
- Collaborate with academic leaders to enhance educational programs for faculty and learners
- Mentor physicians and advanced practice providers, facilitating regular evaluations and professional development
- Maintain clinical activity while exemplifying evidence-based medicine and superior patient care
- Embody servant leadership, supporting the professional growth of department members
- Advance academic and evidence-based practices through publications
- Perform additional reasonable duties as assigned
REPORTING STRUCTURE:
This position reports directly to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Dignity Health Medical Group, Arizona, for medical group activities, and to the Regional Dean, Creighton University School of Medicine, for academic matters.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- MD Degree and Active Board Certification or Board Eligibility
- Arizona State medical licensure
- Completed ACGME Residency training
- Demonstrated physician leadership experience
- Clinical responsibilities within the last 5 years
- Ability to secure full hospital privileges at Dignity Health Arizona hospitals
- Team-oriented physician dedicated to quality care and service to the underserved
- Eligibility for academic appointment with Creighton University School of Medicine
COMPENSATION:
$240.38 /hour
