Job Overview

Join a prestigious academic healthcare institution, The University of Chicago Medicine, as a Surgical Technologist in the Maternity Services department. In this capacity, the Surgical Technologist will support the nursing and medical teams in delivering exceptional care to patients undergoing surgical procedures.

The Surgical Technologist will work collaboratively with nursing staff and other healthcare professionals to adapt care plans in response to the evolving needs of patients, maintaining continuous communication with the Operating Room personnel, physicians, clerical staff, anesthesia providers, and materials management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Effectively performs the surgical scrub role within the operative field across various services.
  • Utilizes knowledge of advanced surgical methods, emergency protocols, and surgical practices in the operating room.
  • Adheres to infection control standards by applying proper aseptic techniques when handling blood and bodily fluids.
  • Operates sterilizers and high-level disinfectors related to surgical procedures; maintains documentation and competencies as required.
  • In collaboration with the Specialty Manager, Charge Nurse, and Central Sterile Processing, exhibits organizational skills in case preparation, cart assembly, and accurate room setup for surgical instruments and trays.
  • Manages and troubleshoots video systems as necessary, collaborating with Administrative Coordinators, Specialty Managers, Clinical Engineering, and In-House Vendors.
  • Ensures cost-effective care through appropriate utilization of equipment and instruments, demonstrating effective supply management based on assessed needs and standards of care.
  • Possesses knowledge of immediate and long-term surgical outcomes, including sponge, needle, and instrument counts, aseptic technique, and proper specimen handling.
  • Assists in the care of surgical patients, including:
    • Preparing the operating room
    • Opening packs, supplies, and instrument sets
    • Positioning patients
    • Monitoring the sterile field
    • Conducting counts
    • Handling specimens
  • Ensures compliance with quality measures, such as Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) core measures.
  • In partnership with the Preceptor Surgical Technologist and RN Circulator, assesses individual patient and surgeon requirements, adjusting instrumentation and supplies accordingly.
  • Conducts inventory and restocking of supplies in operating room suites and Specialty Service carts.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technologist program.
  • CST certification or certification within the first year of employment.
  • Basic knowledge and ability to perform surgical technologist duties, with analytical skills to interpret and communicate relevant data to RN and MD.
  • Ability to function effectively as part of the surgical team, executing the instructions of surgeons and the Circulating RN with precision and focus.
  • Capability to maintain composure in high-pressure situations.
  • Exhibits advanced critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, demonstrating professionalism and confidentiality in all interactions.
  • Demonstrates a high level of teamwork in making decisions related to surgical patient care.
  • Possesses critical thinking skills to anticipate the perioperative needs of patients and surgeons.
  • Able to perform physically demanding tasks and wear lead aprons for extended periods.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Labor and Delivery.

Position Details

  • Full Time, 0.90 FTE - Three 12-hour shifts per week.
  • Day shifts from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, with weekend coverage included.
  • Department: Maternity Services.
  • Non-Union Position.
