Position Overview
The Orthopedic Surgical Technologist plays a crucial role in the surgical environment, providing essential support to patients undergoing orthopedic procedures. This position involves the preparation and management of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies, ensuring a seamless workflow for the surgical team. Responsibilities are carried out under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and are delegated by the surgeon. The role may also encompass sterile processing duties as required.
Key Responsibilities
- Team Collaboration: Actively participates as a member of the surgical team by preparing the operating room and setting up for procedures. This includes:
• Identifying necessary supplies, instruments, and equipment.
• Maintaining a safe environment for patients and staff by correctly using electrical equipment and instruments.
• Adhering to aseptic technique standards and complying with regulatory requirements for instrument care. - Assisting in Surgical Procedures: Functions in the scrub role during surgeries, which involves:
• Maintaining a sterile field and anticipating the needs for instruments and supplies.
• Performing accurate counts of sponges, sharps, and instruments.
• Communicating effectively with the physician and circulator regarding any needs that arise during the procedure. - Additional Duties: Other responsibilities as assigned by the supervising staff.
Qualifications
- Required: Associate's or Vocational degree from an accredited Surgical Technology program.
- Preferred: A minimum of 1 year of experience as a Surgical Technologist.
Licenses and Certifications
- Must meet at least one of the following requirements:
• Certification as a Surgical Technologist from The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting within one year of hire.
• Tech in Surgery TS-C (NCCT) Certification within one year of hire. - Must also meet at least one of the following requirements:
• Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
• Current BLS certification from the American Red Cross.
• Completion of Allina in-house BLS training within 30 days of hire.
Physical Requirements
This position involves medium work, including the ability to lift weights up to 50 lbs occasionally and up to 25 lbs frequently.
