Position Overview:
The Surgical Technologist plays a vital role in patient care and surgical services, working under the guidance of a registered nurse. This position is primarily responsible for fulfilling the scrub role during surgical operations, embodying the mission, vision, and ICARE values of Rush University Medical Center.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Maintain the integrity of the sterile field and back table throughout surgical procedures.
2. Report any discrepancies or issues to the registered nurse present in the operating room.
3. Utilize aseptic techniques to handle and secure instruments, cords, and draping materials.
4. Prepare instruments and equipment for decontamination in accordance with established protocols.
5. Demonstrate fundamental technical skills required in the operating room.
6. Participate in surgical cases in designated areas as assigned.
7. Prioritize scrub activities based on the type of surgical procedure and the requirements of the surgical team.
8. Prepare sutures and other necessary supplies according to the Operating Room Information System preference cards.
9. Assemble and ensure the availability of essential equipment tailored to the surgical procedure and patient needs.
10. Assist in the opening of sterile supplies and apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology to customize setups for surgical procedures.
11. Confirm the functionality of equipment and identify specialty instruments by type, function, and name.
12. Ensure that surgical items such as sponges and instruments are accounted for, adhering to Operating Room policies and procedures.
13. Notify the surgical team of any incorrect processes during surgical procedures and anticipate the needs of the team.
14. Follow protocols for Personal Protective Equipment and biohazard waste management.
15. Collaborate with all healthcare team members to safeguard patient privacy.
16. Restock operating rooms according to established inventory lists.
17. Actively participate in unit meetings and contribute to continuous improvement efforts.

Qualifications:
Required:
- Graduate from an accredited Surgical Technologist program.
- Relevant progressive experience.
- Strong analytical skills and effective communication abilities.
- Capacity to interact positively in challenging situations.
- Proficiency in document review and data entry.
- Competency in scrubbing all assigned surgical procedures.
- Manual dexterity in handling surgical instruments and equipment.
- Knowledge of the sequential steps involved in specific surgical procedures.
- Sound judgment and decision-making capabilities.
- Flexibility to accept both routine and non-routine assignments.

Preferred:
- Ability to lift or carry objects weighing 35-40 lbs and assist in positioning patients, some of whom may exceed 300 lbs.
- Experience in environments where carelessness could lead to injury or exposure to infectious materials and strong chemicals.
