Basic Function:
An educational support assistant operates under the direct guidance of a certified educator.

The educator designs the instructional activities for the assistant and assesses the progress of the students with whom the assistant collaborates.

The educational support assistant is expected to work in close physical proximity to the educator.

Required experience or training:

Must have completed a minimum of two years of coursework at a higher education institution, or possess an associate's degree, or have achieved a passing score on the ParaPro Test.

Should have knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics as appropriate.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Proficient in reading and written communication
  • Familiarity with and willingness to utilize computer software
  • Utilizes appropriate English language
  • Demonstrates a history of responsible conduct
  • Is sensitive to children with varying ability levels
  • Is respectful of children from diverse races, ethnicities, or religious backgrounds
  • Can effectively work with multiple students simultaneously
  • Accepts constructive feedback with a positive demeanor
  • Communicates effectively in writing with staff, parents, and administration
  • Exhibits patience, compassion, and a passion for working with children
  • Is knowledgeable of and adheres to school policies
  • Collaborates well in a team environment and follows directions from certified educators
  • Understands developmentally appropriate strategies for children
  • Highly motivated and a self-starter

Position responsibilities:

Demonstrates knowledge and application of effective instructional elements to support teaching and learning as developed by certified staff.
Ability to implement instructional techniques.
Ability to utilize data collection and observation methods.

Assists certified educators in gathering data for needs assessments, student selection, desired outcomes, and evaluations as requested.

Maintains accurate records on student work, personal data, and test scores as required by certified educators.
Employs appropriate strategies and techniques to provide instructional support in teaching and learning as developed by certified staff.
Ability to apply small group instruction techniques for managing and supporting student learning.
Ability to provide specific instructional techniques to support academic subjects.
May work with individuals or small groups.
Ability to apply techniques that enhance instruction in reading, writing, and mathematics. May monitor student tasks and keep them focused.
Demonstrates initiative in assessing student needs and creating program opportunities to address them.
Shows ability to motivate and assist children and youth.
Utilizes materials that match students' interests and abilities, modifying them as necessary.
Inspires a love for reading, written/spoken language, and math skills. May engage in reading stories and related follow-up activities.
Demonstrates proficiency in utilizing technology to enhance teaching and learning.
Assists students with technology-based lessons and assessments.
Familiar with technological equipment.

Demonstrates effective communication with colleagues, follows instructions, and employs problem-solving skills to work as a valuable member of the instructional team.

Communicates with parents in a sensitive and professional manner. May participate in parent conferences as requested.
Collaborates with district staff members and/or external agencies as required. Available for Open House, parent workshops, and special events as requested.
Works cooperatively with building staff members. Maintains personal time records or other required information. Monitors and records student progress as directed by certified educators.
