Overview:
The Patient Care Assistant undertakes a range of clinical and environmental responsibilities under the supervision of the Registered Nurse. The role requires specialized training and skills that align with the assistant's progress through an accredited nursing program. The Patient Care Assistant is enrolled in an accredited nursing school and embodies the mission, vision, and ICARE values of Rush, adhering to all policies and procedures.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Active enrollment in an accredited Baccalaureate or Master's entry-level nursing program with satisfactory grades upon hire and annually thereafter, or awaiting eligibility (within 3 months of graduation).
  • Completion of a foundational nursing course covering basic nursing skills, including vital signs and activities of daily living (ADLs).
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of the institutional screening examination.
  • Ability to address simple problems effectively.
  • Strong communication and customer service abilities.

Physical Requirements:

  • Capability to walk throughout the Medical Center and remain standing or walking for most of the designated shift.
  • Ability to lift or carry objects weighing 35-40 lbs and assist in positioning patients, some of whom may exceed 300 lbs.
  • Work conditions involve performing tasks where carelessness could lead to injury or illness and/or exposure to potentially infectious materials and/or strong chemical agents.

Key Responsibilities:
ASSISTS THE RN IN PATIENT CARE DELIVERY 1. Reports to the designated Registered Nurse for assignment of duties. 2. Ensures a safe environment for patients. 3. Prioritizes tasks based on patient and unit needs, under the Registered Nurse's guidance. 4. Participates in implementing individualized care plans as directed by the Registered Nurse. 5. Aids patients with daily living activities. 6. Accurately collects patient data and documents care in the appropriate records. 7. Performs routine procedures, treatments, and specimen collections. 8. Demonstrates aseptic techniques when necessary. 9. Assists the Registered Nurse or physician with advanced procedures. 10. Aids in managing uncomplicated tubes and drains. 11. Conducts specific patient care tasks such as blood glucose testing and specimen collection. 12. Exhibits knowledge of age-specific variables and growth and development. 13. Reports any changes in patient condition to the appropriate Registered Nurse. TRANSPORTS PATIENTS AND ITEMS AS NEEDED 14. Assists with patient admissions, discharges, and transport. 15. Transports laboratory specimens and patient belongings as required. 16. Obtains necessary blood products, supplies, and equipment. UTILIZES TECHNOLOGY COMPETENTLY 17. Demonstrates proficiency in using the telephone and patient call systems. 18. Shows proficiency in using EPIC. 19. Demonstrates skill in using unit-specific monitors, pumps, and other equipment. MAINTAINS A SAFE AND ORDERLY ENVIRONMENT 20. Keeps patient rooms safe, organized, and compliant with unit routines. 21. Independently orders, organizes, and restocks supplies as per unit specifications. 22. Replenishes patient room supplies. 23. Maintains emergency supplies. DEMONSTRATES PROFESSIONALISM IN INTERACTIONS 24. Communicates relevant information to team members throughout the shift and to the incoming shift. 25. Coordinates break times and communicates departure and return times per unit protocol. 26. Exhibits initiative and self-direction in work habits. Rush is an equal opportunity employer.
