Job Responsibilities
Enhance programs and services related to substance use disorders within correctional facilities and Community Corrections Alternative Programs (CCAPs) under the Virginia Department of Corrections. This role is pivotal in fostering opportunities for individuals to lead healthy, secure, and productive lives while promoting public safety by addressing the opioid crisis and fentanyl-related issues through improved services for those affected by substance use disorders.
Key Functions
- Act as the primary coordinator for Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) initiatives within the Virginia Department of Corrections.
- Facilitate collaboration between medical services and substance use disorder treatment programs to ensure effective care coordination.
- Engage with various state agencies to enhance treatment options and distribute opioid overdose reversal medications.
- Improve post-release care planning for inmates and probationers involved in medication-assisted treatment.
- Provide education on medication-assisted treatment to staff, inmates, and probationers.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates should possess a comprehensive understanding of opioid use and addiction, along with experience in Medication Assisted Treatment involving antagonist, agonist, and partial agonist substances. Familiarity with the criminal justice system and the dynamics of probationers and parolees is essential. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, are required. Experience in supervising staff and providing coaching is necessary, as is the ability to act as a liaison among agency personnel, inmates, probationers, and treatment providers. Strong presentation skills and experience in facilitating training sessions are also crucial.
Additional Considerations
Prior experience in the substance use field, particularly with Medication Assisted Treatment providers, is preferred. Candidates must be eligible for substance abuse certification through a recognized national or state certification board and have relevant experience in the criminal justice sector.
