About the Role:

Position Overview

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) serves as the clinical authority for a designated program or nursing practice area. The CNS supervises clinical operations within a specific service line/population of expertise, ensuring collaboration and oversight across all campuses with similar specialties. The CNS partners with nurse educators in their area of expertise and acts as a consultant to various departments. This role involves leadership to integrate innovative knowledge within the specialty area. The CNS operates at both the microsystem and system levels, influencing three spheres: patient, staff, and organization. Responsibilities include functioning as a consultant, educator, researcher, collaborator, and expert clinician. The CNS collaborates with the Nursing Director to enhance clinical practice and education across the unit, division, and health system. A vital aspect of the CNS role is to generate and assess evidence for clinical practice, contributing to the evolution of nursing practice at local, state, and national levels. The CNS plays a key role in applying the Professional Practice Model throughout the health system and supports the advancement of the professional practice environment by communicating strategic nursing initiatives.



Minimum Job Qualifications
  • Licensure or Certifications: Must hold a valid APRN license in Georgia and be board certified as a Clinical Nurse Specialist.
  • Educational Requirements: A Master's Degree in Nursing as a Clinical Nurse Specialist.
  • Experience: A minimum of five (5) years in nursing practice, with at least three (3) years of recent experience in the relevant service line/population.
  • Other: Membership in a professional organization within one month of hire.

  • Assess, plan, and evaluate patient care, staff performance, and organizational outcomes.
  • Impact patient care by intervening in complex cases and providing support to nursing staff.
  • Design and evaluate care programs, engaging in projects at various organizational levels.
  • Act as a consultant and advocate for patients and their families.
  • Support professional shared governance through unit-based practice councils and organizational meetings.
  • Participate in the development of policies and procedures with a system-wide perspective.


Essential Responsibilities
  • Enhance nursing practice by implementing innovative solutions to patient care challenges.
  • Serve as an expert clinician in patient care delivery.
  • Assist in providing care in accordance with facility, state, and federal regulations.
  • Integrate research, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement into clinical settings.
  • Develop, coordinate, implement, and evaluate educational programs for patients, families, staff, and the community.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to establish performance standards aimed at improving patient outcomes.
  • Partner with academic institutions to promote the academic growth of students and staff.
  • Facilitate the professional development of staff and students through mentorship and preceptorship.
