Position Summary

A Marine Vessel Captain is fundamentally accountable for the secure and effective management of the ship, which encompasses its seaworthiness, safety, security, cargo handling, navigation, crew oversight, and adherence to legal standards. The captain holds the ultimate responsibility for the safe and cost-effective operation of the vessel. It is expected that a captain possesses both managerial and leadership capabilities alongside proficiency in navigation, seamanship, and vessel operations.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Valid USCG Medical Certificate.
  • Valid USCG Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) – Minimum endorsement of 100 GRT, Near Coastal.
  • First Aid & CPR certification.
  • TWIC Card.
  • A minimum of three years of relevant experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safe navigation and piloting of the vessel.
  • Oversee and manage crew and passenger activities.
  • Safeguard the environment.
  • Protect the cargo or property of the charterer.
  • Handle bridge administration and paperwork.
  • Guarantee that the crew is adequately trained for their responsibilities.
  • Monitor cargo transfer during critical operations when necessary.
  • Act as a liaison between the vessel and dock personnel.
  • Serve as the Emergency Response Manager during any emergency situations.
  • Ensure compliance with policies and procedures by the vessel crew.
  • Update crew on new or revised policies and procedures as needed.

Work Schedule

The typical work schedule for a Captain consists of 14 days on the vessel/barge followed by 7 days off, although this schedule may vary. Daily work is conducted over a 12-hour shift.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Hearing: All pilothouse personnel must communicate effectively with other vessels, Coast Guard stations, Corps of Engineers, lockmasters, and fellow crew members. Communication may occur via VHF radio, orally, or through sound and hand signals. Effective hearing is essential for successful communication in various conditions encountered aboard a towboat.

Vision: Pilothouse personnel must possess vision that allows for safe vessel operation under various conditions, both day and night, throughout the year. Color vision is necessary for identifying navigation lights, signals, and symbols, as well as warning indicators. Adequate depth perception is required for navigation in close quarters, including lock or bridge approaches.
