Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Animal Health Technician to join our team at the Fort Belvoir Veterinary Center. As an Animal Health Technician, you will play a critical role in providing medical care to Military Working Dogs, Government Owned Animals, and Privately Owned Animals assigned to and under the care of Belvoir Branch.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform technical procedures to facilitate small animal medical and surgical care
  • Support the work of veterinary medical officers or veterinary medical programs
  • Determine vital signs of animals presented for routine sick call or medical evaluation clinics
  • Obtain blood, urine, fecal sample, and other clinical specimens from animals for laboratory diagnosis
  • Place intravenous (IV) catheter and initiates fluid therapy
  • Administer tranquilizers and sedatives under supervision of the attending veterinarian and according to established protocols
Requirements
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service
  • Experience in performing technical procedures to facilitate small animal medical and surgical care
  • Experience in supporting the work of veterinary medical officers or veterinary medical programs
  • Determination of vital signs of animals presented for routine sick call or medical evaluation clinics
Preferred Qualifications
  • Licensed/Certified/Registered Veterinary Technician or Equivalent Licensure
Working Conditions

All animal care medical duties are performed under the direction of a licensed veterinarian and comply with American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC), and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) guidelines to maintain certification and accreditation.

Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.

You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.

One year trial/probationary period may be required.

Direct deposit of pay is required.
