Fourth Year Elective Rotation in Psychiatry

As a fourth-year medical student, you have the opportunity to participate in the Elective Psychiatry Rotation at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services. This rotation provides a comprehensive experience in psychiatric care, allowing you to develop your skills in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with mental health disorders.
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
During this rotation, you will have active involvement on the Child and Adolescent inpatient unit. You will participate in admissions, patient care, treatment planning, and management. You will also be involved in assessment of childhood mental illness, including ADHD, Depression, Anxiety, suicidality, autistic spectrum disorders, and psychiatric/psychological issues of children with illness.
Adult Psychiatry
Students will learn the essentials of identification, assessment, and treatment of patients with substance-use disorders with an emphasis on screening and motivational techniques. You will participate in patient evaluation, creation of treatment plans, and accompany patients to the Intensive Outpatient Program 3 days a week.
Geriatric Psychiatry
Students will have active involvement on the older adult inpatient unit at Pine Rest. You will assist with admissions, develop a differential diagnosis and Psycho-Social-Spiritual treatment approach, daily rounds, and discharge planning. You will also have the opportunity to observe Probate Court proceedings, participate in family meetings, and multidisciplinary treatment team meetings. Additionally, you will be exposed to different psychiatric diseases seen in this patient population, including Depression, Anxiety, Dementia, and Schizophrenia, and develop an understanding about the unique pharmacologic strategies for treating these conditions.
