Job Overview

Position Title: Mobility and Orientation Specialist


Role Summary:
The Mobility and Orientation (O&M) Specialist is responsible for assisting individuals with visual impairments in enhancing their travel skills and fostering independence.

The successful candidate will have a solid background in creating tailored O&M training programs and a comprehensive understanding of the unique challenges faced by our clients.


Primary Duties:
  • Conduct detailed evaluations of clients' mobility requirements and formulate customized orientation and mobility training strategies.
  • Deliver personalized instruction in diverse settings, including residential, community, and professional environments.
  • Instruct clients on the effective use of mobility tools, such as canes and electronic travel devices, while improving their spatial awareness and navigation capabilities.
  • Collaborate with clients, their families, and other professionals to establish objectives and monitor advancements.
  • Design and facilitate workshops and training sessions focused on orientation and mobility subjects.
  • Stay informed about best practices, new technologies, and developments in the orientation and mobility sector.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of client progress and provide reports on outcomes.
  • Advocate for clients and assist in their participation in various community activities and environments.

Essential Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Orientation and Mobility, Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education, or a related discipline.
  • Certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) is mandatory.
  • Demonstrated experience working with individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
  • In-depth knowledge of mobility strategies, assistive technologies, and adaptive methods.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication abilities, with a talent for engaging clients from varied backgrounds.
  • Capability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in creating and executing community outreach initiatives.
  • Familiarity with a variety of mobility aids and adaptive technologies.
