Position Overview

South Dakota State University is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual to fill the role of a full-time, 12-month, live-in Director of Residence Life. This position is responsible for managing multiple residence halls and/or off-campus housing facilities while supervising a team of Residence Assistants.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Foster a strong sense of community and belonging among residents.
  • Guide hall councils and support the establishment of self-governance and active community involvement.
  • Effectively address common community challenges in a timely manner.
  • Provide training and mentorship to staff and students to achieve programming objectives.
  • Evaluate student staff programming initiatives and provide constructive feedback.
  • Mediate conflicts among students or staff as necessary.
  • Proactively engage with at-risk students and refer them to appropriate professional services when needed.
  • Handle assigned conduct cases of residential students in accordance with established conduct policies.
  • Educate students and staff on policies and the conduct process.
  • Participate in the on-call duty rotation.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and develop the student resident assistant team.
  • Implement crisis intervention strategies when applicable.
Qualifications:
  • Availability for significant evening and weekend commitments is essential.
  • A bachelor's degree is required.
  • A valid driver's license is necessary.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. is required; sponsorship is not available for this position.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree in Psychology, Sociology, Human Development, or a related field is preferred.
  • Previous experience in residence life is advantageous but not mandatory.
