Pinellas County offers an excellent opportunity for skilled craftworkers to apply their expertise at the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Airport. As our airport expands, your contributions will be vital in its upkeep.

Position Overview:

This role involves the maintenance of airport grounds, encompassing landside, airside, terminal areas, and other properties managed by Pinellas County. Responsibilities include the upkeep of runways, taxiways, and airfield turf, with a focus on compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards. The ideal candidate will operate various equipment, including tractors and mowers, while performing additional tasks as needed. The work schedule is Tuesday to Friday from 5:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct maintenance and repairs on runways, taxiways, and grounds, including markings and pavement surfaces.
  • Provide feedback to supervisors regarding the necessary time, workforce, equipment, and materials for airfield maintenance tasks.
  • Maintain grounds through mowing, weed control, grading, and filling ruts.
  • Operate equipment such as dump trucks, mowers, and diesel-powered tractors with attachments.
  • Perform repairs on bituminous and concrete surfaces of runways, taxiways, and aprons.
  • Execute joint seal repairs, including sawing, routing, and applying hot seal material.
  • Utilize power sweepers for cleaning runways and taxiways.
  • Operate various cleaning equipment, ensuring the use of appropriate safety gear.
  • Install and repair chain link fences, barbed wire, and sliding gates.
  • Install and maintain signage and support structures.
  • Assist in preventive maintenance programs for tools and vehicles.
  • Ensure the upkeep and replacement of landscaping on airport property.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Experience in skilled trades related to maintenance and repair of irrigation systems, electrical systems, plumbing, and painting is required.

  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience; or
  • Completion of a 2-year vocational or technical program with a diploma or certification and at least 1 year of relevant experience; or
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid State of Florida Driver's License upon hire, subject to evaluation of Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
  • Flexibility to work various schedules, including emergency situations.
  • Willingness to work shifts that may change with little notice, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to meet TSA requirements for unescorted access to Security Identification Display Area (SIDA).
  • Regular attendance at work is mandatory.
  • Capability to work under extreme temperatures and adverse weather conditions.
  • Aptitude to handle personal danger while operating light and heavy machinery in a noisy environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with CFR Part and associated Advisory Circulars.
  • Previous experience in airfield operations.
  • Proficiency in using two-way radios for communication with Air Traffic Control.
  • Experience in maintaining and troubleshooting irrigation systems.
  • Knowledge of asphalt and concrete patching techniques.
  • Possession of a Florida Public Applicator License with Aquatic Weed Control and Right of Way Pest certification.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to operate heavy machinery.
  • Capability to lift up to 50 pounds and effectively use hand tools.
  • Maintain physical fitness suitable for assigned duties, including walking, crouching, crawling, kneeling, reaching, and climbing.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of airfield operations and maintenance programs.
  • Familiarity with materials, methods, and equipment used in airfield maintenance.
  • Knowledge of FAA regulations regarding ground cover heights.
  • Awareness of Best Management Practices for Landscape Maintenance.
  • Understanding of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to identify maintenance needs and communicate effectively.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining professional relationships.
  • Competence in accurately recording information.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents and blueprints.
