Pinellas County presents an excellent opportunity for skilled multi-trade craftworkers at the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Airport in Clearwater, FL. Our airport is expanding, and we need your expertise to help maintain its facilities.

This role involves the upkeep of airport grounds, encompassing landside, airside, terminal areas, and other properties owned by Pinellas County. Responsibilities include maintaining runways, taxiways, and airfield turfs, with a focus on compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards. The ideal candidate will operate tractors, mowers, and other heavy machinery, along with performing additional tasks as necessary. The work schedule is Tuesday to Friday from 5:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and repair runways, taxiways, and grounds, including runway and taxiway markings and pavement surfaces.
  • Provide input to supervisors regarding time, workforce, equipment, and materials needed for airfield maintenance tasks.
  • Perform grounds maintenance, including mowing, weed control, grading, and filling ruts.
  • Operate equipment such as dump trucks, mowers, and diesel-powered tractors with attachments.
  • Conduct bituminous and concrete repairs on runways, taxiways, and aprons.
  • Execute joint seal repairs, including sawing, routing, and applying hot joint seal material.
  • Utilize power sweepers for cleaning runways, taxiways, and aprons.
  • Operate backpack blowers, power washers, and vacuums, ensuring the use of appropriate safety equipment.
  • Install, assemble, and repair chain link fences, barbed wire, and sliding gate sections.
  • Install, repair, and replace signage and support structures.
  • Assist in preventive maintenance programs for maintenance equipment and vehicles.
  • Responsible for maintaining landscaping on airport property as needed.
  • Perform other assigned duties as required.

Qualifications:

Experience in skilled trades or crafts related to the maintenance and repair of irrigation systems, electrical systems, plumbing, and painting is essential.

  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience; or
  • Completion of a 2-year vocational or technical program with a diploma or certification and at least 1 year of relevant experience; or
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid State of Florida Driver's License upon hire, subject to evaluation of Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
  • Willingness to work varied schedules, including emergency situations.
  • Flexibility to work shifts that may change with little notice, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to meet TSA requirements for unescorted access to Security Identification Display Area (SIDA).
  • Regular attendance at work is mandatory.
  • Capability to work under extreme temperatures and adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to manage personal safety while working around heavy machinery and in a noisy environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with CFR Part, associated Advisory Circulars, and the Airport Certification Manual.
  • Previous experience in airfield operations.
  • Proficiency in using two-way radios for communication with Air Traffic Control.
  • Experience in maintaining and troubleshooting irrigation systems.
  • Knowledge of asphalt and concrete patching techniques.
  • Herbicide applicator license: Florida Public Applicator License with Aquatic Weed Control and Right of Way Pest.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to operate heavy machinery.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds and effectively use hand tools.
  • Maintain physical fitness for tasks including walking, crouching, crawling, kneeling, reaching, and climbing.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of airfield operations, services, and maintenance programs.
  • Familiarity with materials, methods, and equipment used in airfield maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of FAA regulations regarding ground cover heights.
  • Awareness of Best Management Practices for Landscape Maintenance.
  • Understanding of occupational hazards and safety precautions in the workplace.
  • Ability to identify maintenance needs and communicate effectively with supervisors.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Capacity to build and maintain professional relationships.
  • Proficient in accurately recording information in reports.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints.
