Pinellas County offers an excellent opportunity for skilled craftworkers to apply their expertise at the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Airport in Clearwater, FL. Join us in maintaining our expanding airport facilities.

This role involves the upkeep of airport grounds, which encompasses landside, airside, terminal areas, and other properties owned by Pinellas County. Responsibilities include maintaining runways, taxiways, and airfield turf, focusing on compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards. The ideal candidate will operate tractors, mowers, and other heavy machinery as required. The work schedule is set for Tuesday to Friday from 5:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct maintenance and repairs on runways, taxiways, and surrounding grounds, including pavement surfaces and markings.
  • Provide feedback to supervisors regarding time, workforce, equipment, and materials needed for airfield maintenance tasks.
  • Maintain grounds through mowing, weed control, grading, and filling ruts.
  • Operate various equipment such as dump trucks, mowers, and diesel-powered tractors with attachments.
  • Perform repairs on bituminous and concrete surfaces for runways, taxiways, and aprons.
  • Execute joint seal repairs, including sawing, routing, and applying hot joint seal material.
  • Utilize power sweepers for cleaning runways, taxiways, and aprons.
  • Use backpack blowers, power washers, and vacuums while adhering to safety protocols.
  • Install and repair chain link fences, barbed wire, and sliding gates.
  • Install, repair, and replace signage and support structures.
  • Assist in preventive maintenance programs for equipment and vehicles.
  • Responsible for the upkeep and replacement of landscaping on airport property.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Experience in skilled trades related to maintenance and repair of irrigation systems, electrical systems, plumbing, and painting is required.

  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience; or
  • Completion of a 2-year vocational or technical program with a diploma or certification and at least 1 year of relevant experience; or
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid State of Florida Driver's License upon hire, subject to evaluation of Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
  • Flexibility to work varied schedules, including emergency and disaster situations.
  • Willingness to work shifts that may rotate or change with little notice, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to meet TSA requirements for unescorted access to Security Identification Display Area (SIDA).
  • Regular attendance at work is essential.
  • Ability to perform work under extreme temperatures and adverse weather conditions.
  • Capability to work safely around heavy machinery and in noisy environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with CFR Part, associated Advisory Circulars, and the Airport Certification Manual.
  • Previous experience in airfield operations.
  • Proficiency in using two-way radios for communication with Air Traffic Control.
  • Experience in maintaining and troubleshooting irrigation systems.
  • Knowledge of asphalt and concrete patching techniques.
  • Herbicide applicator license: Florida Public Applicator License with Aquatic Weed Control and Right of Way Pest.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to operate heavy machinery.
  • Capability to lift up to 50 pounds and effectively use hand tools.
  • Maintain physical fitness necessary for assigned duties, including walking, crouching, crawling, kneeling, reaching, and climbing.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of airfield operations, services, and maintenance programs.
  • Familiarity with materials, methods, and equipment used in airfield maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of FAA regulations regarding allowable ground cover heights.
  • Awareness of Best Management Practices for Landscape Maintenance.
  • Understanding of occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary for the work.
  • Ability to identify maintenance needs and communicate effectively with supervisors.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with colleagues.
  • Competence in accurately recording information in various reports.
  • Ability to read and interpret sketches, diagrams, and blueprints.
