Overview:
Accountable for executing all responsibilities associated with phlebotomy, including specimen acquisition, receipt, and referrals.

  • Guarantees the quality of work performed by all team members, coordinating services to clients in a manner that promotes satisfaction and operational efficiency.
  • Ensures adherence to CAP, JCAHO, OSHA, infection control, safety, and other regulatory standards, including the privacy and security of health information (PHI).
  • Maintains the collection tray/container/bag and work area in a clean and sanitary state, restocking as necessary.
  • Responsible for the procurement of supplies for the department in collaboration with the team lead.
  • Executes all phlebotomy tasks, including specimen collection, receipt, and send-outs.
  • Prepares specimens for referral to external laboratories, which includes ordering miscellaneous tests, packaging specimens, arranging transportation, completing referral paperwork, and managing the mailing system.
  • Conducts all patient specimen collections, including but not limited to venipuncture, capillary collection, urine drug screen collection, skin tests, and blood, throat, and NP cultures.
  • Ensures that specimen requirements are satisfied at the time of collection and maintains specimen integrity.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills by interacting competently with clients, patients, family members, nurses, physicians, and colleagues.
  • Operates the laboratory information system to document specimen details, patient registration, order entry, collection lists, and other assigned tasks.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned (stand-by/on-call, inventory, special projects, cross-training, etc.).
  • Completes performance evaluations and annual competency assessments for team members in a timely manner.
Qualifications:
Education/Skills
  • High School diploma or equivalent. Diploma or transcript required at the time of hire.
  • Completion of a Phlebotomy, Medical Laboratory, or Medical Assistant program that includes phlebotomy is preferred.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, computer data entry, and organizational skills.
Experience
  • One year of phlebotomy experience is preferred.
Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications
  • Certification from a National Accredited Program is preferred.
