Overview:
The Phlebotomy Technician is accountable for executing all responsibilities associated with phlebotomy, including the collection, receipt, and referral of specimens.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensures that the organization's philosophy and core values are reflected in the services provided to clients.
  • Takes initiative for pursuing and achieving professional development and ongoing education.
  • Guarantees the quality of work conducted by all team members, coordinating services to clients to ensure satisfaction and operational efficiency.
  • Ensures adherence to CAP, JCAHO, OSHA, infection control, safety, and other regulatory standards, including the privacy and security of health information (PHI).
  • Keeps the collection tray/container/bag and work area in a tidy and sanitary state, restocking as needed.
  • Responsible for the procurement of supplies for the department in collaboration with the team lead.
  • Performs all duties of a phlebotomist, including specimen collection, receipt, and dispatch.
  • Prepares specimens for referral to external laboratories, including ordering miscellaneous tests, packaging specimens, arranging transportation, and managing referral documentation.
  • Conducts all patient specimen collections, which may include venipuncture, capillary collection, urine drug screening, skin tests, and cultures.
  • Ensures that specimen requirements are fulfilled at the time of collection and maintains specimen integrity.
  • Exhibits strong communication skills by effectively interacting with clients, patients, family members, nurses, physicians, and colleagues.
  • Utilizes the laboratory information system to document specimen details, patient registration, order entry, collection lists, and other assigned tasks.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned (stand-by/on-call, inventory management, special projects, cross-training, etc.).
  • Completes performance evaluations and annual competency assessments for team members in a timely manner.
Qualifications:
Education/Skills:
  • High School diploma or equivalent. Diploma or transcript required at the time of hire.
  • Completion of a Phlebotomy, Medical Laboratory, or Medical Assistant program that includes phlebotomy is preferred.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, computer data entry, and organizational skills.
Experience:
  • One year of phlebotomy experience is preferred.
Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:
  • Certification from a National Accredited Program is preferred.
